Morant was charged with $25,000 fine.
The NBA charged the Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant with a $25,000 fine for tossing the game ball among spectators during the 114-113 defeat against the New York Knicks. The fourth-seeded Western Conference side has been on a two-game losing streak. After going down to the Knicks on Friday, the Grizzlies recorded their second straight defeat at the hands of the Spurs.
While they were without their star Morant due to right shoulder soreness, the league hit the 25-year-old with a $25 grand fine for his actions in the Knicks game. The league announced the charges on March 2 in an official statement.
It read, “Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant has been fined $25,000 for throwing the game ball into the spectator stands, it was announced today by Joe Dumars, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations.”
Notably, the incident took place during the end of the third quarter when Morant caught a one-handed rebound and tossed it among the stands. The the ball landed beyond the basket, prompting a technical foul. However, it didn’t seem like something done intentionally or with a thought of committing a foul.
As a result, the Knicks started the final quarter with a free throw, which ultimately ended up making the difference in the end. Moreover, in the final seconds, OG Anunoby came up with a clutch three-pointer, ultimately sealing the deal for New York.
Talking about Morant, while the South Carolina-born has been a part of only 37 games for the side in 2024-25, he has delivered key performances in the times of need. In the Knicks game, Morant finished with 25 points, four rebounds and seven assists. He is averaging 20.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game this season.

While Morant has maintained a notable average this season, several injury issues have compelled him to miss 22 games. The two-time All-Star was out of action during the 130-128 loss against the Spurs due to shoulder pain.
The Grizzlies are back in action on Monday against the Hawks. Before the game, they have released an injury report and Morant has found his place on it. He has been listed questionable to play in the game.
