The teams with the worst record have not been able to land first overall pick since 2019.
NBA analyst Ashley Nicole Moss pointed out the biggest flaw in the Draft Lottery. Moss highlighted that the lottery is continuously failing to help the weaker teams rebuild themselves. Notably, the Dallas Mavericks, who had only 1.8% chances of winning, ended up landing the first overall pick in the NBA Draft Lottery 2025.
On the other hand, the teams that finished with the worst records, the Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards and the Charlotte Hornets, ended up with fifth, sixth, and fourth picks, respectively. Speaking about the same, Moss said that the point of the draft lottery is to help the teams that have been struggling from the last few years to rebuild themselves.
She said, “Draft lottery is supposed to award teams and help teams out that are struggling to rebuild or in markets that maybe necessarily don’t land those big free agents like Utah, like Washington. Like some of the other markets that have been struggling these recent years. And the primary goal is to help those teams get better.”
She went on to highlight how the teams with the worst record have not been able to land first overall pick since 2019. Moss said, “Each and every year, we see that the lottery fails to do that. Since 2019, the leagues, the team in the league with the worst record has never landed the number one pick. They have constantly been fit.”
Questioning the legitimacy of the lottery, Moss said that the number one pick went to a team which participated in the play-in tournament. She also highlighted Luka Doncic’s mid-season trade to the LA Lakers, seemingly suggesting that something is fishy.
Asking the purpose of the lottery system, she said, “I’m wondering then because if the number one pick’s going to go to a team via the lottery that was just in the play-in, that traded away one of the greatest players that we have seen so far and then gets rewarded with the number one pick to get a generational two-way player coming out of college.
Moreover, she added that in such cases, weaker teams such as the Utah Jazz and the Washington Wizards find themselves in the middle of nowhere. Moss went on to say “Then if you’re Utah and you’re Washington, you’re like, ‘Well, what are we supposed to do?’”

"the draft lottery is just absolutely broken (…) the lottery is supposed to help struggling teams to rebuild and we see each and every year the lottery fails to do that (…) so what is it for?"@CBSSports https://t.co/Wq0eOc88JH pic.twitter.com/GurGNcoh4c
Implying that the lottery system is not fair, she said, “The system is broken, it’s just not fair. Everyone wants to knock tanking and say teams shouldn’t tank. But the only real way to stand a chance is to just strip your entire team down. Basically give up in the season and hope to the basketball gods that you are rewarded in a lottery that has shown nine times out of ten won’t reward you anyway.”
Notably, over the last three years, the team that had the worst record has fallen to No. 5 for three consecutive years. In addition, it’s been the second straight season when teams that qualified for the play-in tournament have won lotteries. The Mavericks, finished at tenth spot in the standings this year, and the Atlanta Hawks, who made it to the postseason last year, and had 3% chances to win, ended up with the first overall pick.
