Dallas Wings & Mavericks pull off the rarest double draft feat in basketball history.
The Dallas sporting community is abuzz after a shocking set of events unfolded on Monday night. Paige Bueckers who is the newest sporting icon in Dallas has also reacted to the change of fortunes for the NBA side Dallas Mavericks.
The Draft Lottery event took place on Monday with franchises like Washington Wizards, Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers leading the way to land the number 1 pick. However, the Dallas Mavericks, who had a mere 1.8% chance which translates to 1 in 55, won the lottery pick. Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers like any other basketball fan reacted to it shockingly.
She said, “I didn’t think it was real at first. But I believe God makes no mistakes.” The Mavericks’ fan base lost all hope on their current roster after the shocking Luka Doncic trade and consistent injury issues for key players. The Dallas Mavericks as a result also lost out in the Play-In Tournament.

However, a beacon of hope has emerged with the one time NBA champs getting the number one pick for this year’s draft event. Former Duke University forward Cooper Flagg is the most likely first pick. He had an incredible impact at Duke at the NCAA, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists with a Field Goal percentage of 48.1.
The likelihood of both basketball teams from the same city getting the lottery pick in the same year remains very meager. But for the second time in the history such a feat has taken place. Dallas Mavericks recently won the first pick from the draft lottery while similarly Dallas Wings from the WNBA won the first pick.
The Wings went on to pick Paige Bueckers who has been the biggest story coming out of the NCAA season this year. The UConn guard had a fairytale ending to her college basketball career after winning the championship in April. She is being looked at as a long term future of the Dallas based franchise.
Only Cleveland have had a similar feat, where two teams from the same city in the same year won the draft lottery. In 2003, Cleveland Cavaliers picked LeBron James from the first draft pick, while Cleveland Rockers (WNBA) selected LaToya Thomas from Mississippi State University.
