Andreeva, the rising star, meets Townsend’s singles challenge.
Fifth seed Mirra Andreeva is set to face unseeded Taylor Townsend in the third round of the US Open 2025. The 18-year-old Russian has looked untouchable so far in New York, easing past Alycia Parks and Anastasia Potapova in straight sets. Townsend, meanwhile, is enjoying a singles surge of her own, ousting Antonia Ruzic before stunning 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko without dropping a set.

Andreeva, achieving world No. 5 for the first time in her career, has been one of the breakout forces on tour. She stormed to back-to-back titles in Indian Wells and Dubai, taking down top names like Aryna Sabalenka and Clara Tauson en route. Quarterfinal runs in Madrid, Rome, Bad Homburg, Wimbledon, and Roland Garros, along with a semifinal in Brisbane, underline her consistency. Still, there have been a few hiccups with early exits in Doha, Miami, Stuttgart, Berlin, and most recently Montreal. Statistically, she shines with 155 aces in 48 matches, winning nearly 69% of first-serve points, 45.6% on return, and converting 51.8% of break points.

Townsend, the doubles world No. 1, has thrived alongside partners Katerina Siniakova and Zhang Shuai, winning titles in Melbourne, Dubai, and Washington. Singles has been less rewarding with no titles and just one quarterfinal this season in Washington, where she lost to Leylah Fernandez. In 14 matches, she’s struck 73 aces with 63.2% first-serve points won, 39.1% on return, and 38% break-point conversion.
Mirra Andreeva leads their head-to-head 1-0, having rallied past Taylor Townsend in their lone meeting last year in Madrid.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Madrid | Round of 128 | Mirra Andreeva | 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 |
| Mirra Andreeva | Category | Taylor Townsend |
| 5 | Current Ranking | 139 |
| 145-46 | Career W-L | 304-187 |
| 36-12 | YTD W-L | 16-13 |
| 3 | Career Titles | 0 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 2 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Townsend’s upset of Ostapenko shows she can spring surprises, but Andreeva’s form and consistency suggest the teenager holds the upper hand.
Milestone Moment 🤩

mma I’m an academic turned sports writer from Raipur, India, specializing in the NFL, MMA, and tennis at The Playoffs. I previously wrote for Sportskeeda and hold a B.A. and M.A. in History. My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
