Mike Tomlin Answers What Impact Aaron Rodgers Will Have on Their Draft Plans

Steelers draft plans to continue despite the wait over Aaron Rodgers

The main focus of this offseason has been the Aaron Rodgers saga, which continues to provide updates every now and then. The former Packers and Jets quarterback has become a free agent for the first time in his career and is taking a long time to come to a decision.

Ever since the Jets announced that they were moving on from Rodgers and signed Justin Fields as their new quarterback, teams such as the Giants, Browns, Steelers, and Vikings were connected to the 4-time MVP. Over the course of the past couple of months, the Giants have signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, while the Browns have signed Joe Flacco and could potentially draft a QB in the upcoming days.

Minnesota is rumored to be Rodgers’s choice of destination, but from the looks of it, the Vikings are not completely on board with the idea. That leaves the Pittsburgh Steelers with whom Rodgers has already met. In fact, the former Super Bowl Champion even had a casual throwing session with Pittsburgh’s newly signed wideout, D.K. Metcalf.

How Will Rodgers Impact the Steelers’ Draft?

The Pittsburgh Steelers held a press conference yesterday which was attended by their head coach, Mike Tomlin, and general manager Omar Khan. During the press conference, reporters asked several questions pertaining to Aaron Rodgers.

When asked if the Aaron Rodgers situation has any impact on the Steelers’ draft process, head coach Tomlin left no doubts with his “It does not” response. Tomlin also spoke on what the outcome of the draft will have on the pursuit of Rodgers, or any other outside quarterback, when pressed further.

“I think what you do in the draft often times affects maybe some… some, you know, talent acquisition that happens. After we’ll see how the acquisition goes this weekend.”

What Are the Steelers’ Plans at Quarterback

Currently, Pittsburgh has two quarterbacks on their roster, Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. General manager Omar Khan opened the press conference by stating that the plan is to enter training camp with 4 quarterbacks and that all options are available to make that happen.

“We discussed in Palm Beach a couple of weeks ago. We go to camp with four quarterbacks. “Right now, we have two on the roster. All options are on the table on how we acquire those last two. I assure you we’ll have four when we get to Latrobe.”

Having said that, the press conference featured more questions revolving around Rodgers and whether or not the Steelers still see him as a possible addition to their roster, especially since, as one reporter suggested, Tomlin had drawn training camp as the line of demarcation.

“To be quite honest with you, I don’t know that I meant that specifically for him or the circumstance. I’m just saying in general, you know when you report to training camp, man, it’s a line of demarcation for development of a group, individually and collectively.”

As the Aaron Rodgers saga continues to loom over Pittsburgh, the Steelers will head into the draft with the idea of walking away with two signal callers. However, with only 6 draft picks this year and needs at other positions as well, the Steelers may have some tough decisions to make in just two days’ time.
