Eliminated from the playoffs even before the kickoff of this Sunday Night Football game, Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys still managed to defeat the Buccaneers.

A Performance Without Meaning? Maybe Not.

Given the precarious nature of Mike McCarthy’s position following a disastrous season, this victory may have shifted the narrative around the Cowboys’ head coach. Although seemingly anecdotal, it could prove pivotal in determining his future with the team. In a challenging season, this late-year triumph offers a much-needed breath of fresh air.

After the 26-24 win, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed strong support for McCarthy, highlighting his professionalism despite the tough circumstances:

“There’s many things that have gone into us sitting here not in the playoffs, and you can start with me,” Jones said. “I’m not trying to be any way other than a lot of people contribute to it when you win. A lot of people contribute to it when you don’t. But, boy, give me that kind of effort, that kind of professionalism. Those guys came out and played as if they were fighting in the championship to go to the Super Bowl. I can’t tell you how proud of them and the coaching staff I am. It really shows me something.”

A Difficult Season

The Dallas Cowboys currently sit with a 7-8 record, placing them third in the NFC East. The team has endured significant challenges, most notably losing quarterback Dak Prescott to a season-ending hamstring injury in Week 9.

On offense, the Cowboys have totaled 4,604 yards, averaging 5.0 yards per play, with 1,397 rushing yards and 3,408 passing yards. On defense, they’ve given up 4,984 total yards, allowing opponents to average 5.8 yards per play, including 1,905 rushing yards and 3,346 passing yards.

Despite these setbacks, the Cowboys have shown resilience, winning three of their last four games, including this recent 26-24 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A Glimmer of Hope for Mike McCarthy?

This relatively strong finish to the season may just save Mike McCarthy from being shown the door on the infamous Black Monday following the end of the regular season.

Regardless, the Cowboys’ offseason is sure to be eventful if the franchise hopes to keep pace with the Eagles and Commanders in the NFC East.

Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys will have a chance to show their resilience once again, facing the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday.
