From Michigan to Minnesota – Quarterback J.J. McCarthy Gets Candid About the Vikings Culture and Building Trust With Teammates

The Minnesota Vikings’ training camp is in full swing now, and that means second-year starter J.J. McCarthy is preparing to take his first snaps in the NFL. McCarthy, who missed out on his entire rookie season after suffering a season-ending knee injury last year, is now getting ready to lead the Vikings into a new era.

Speaking to ESPN’s sports anchor, Elle Duncan, the 22-year-old spoke at length about the team’s culture and how he is preparing to lead a well-established team to greater heights.

What Has Surprised McCarthy About Vikings Football Culture?

McCarthy, a native of Illinois, spent three years playing his college football for the Michigan Wolverines. Now in Minnesota after the Vikings drafted him last year with the 10th overall pick, McCarthy was asked about his thoughts on the most surprising aspect of Minnesota’s football culture.

The 2023 CFP National Champion with the Wolverines said he was taken aback by the fans and their level of enthusiasm every season. Prior to experiencing the Vikings’ fan base and the strong football culture in Minnesota, McCarthy was of the opinion that it was just a “hockey state.”

“I would say exactly that, the football culture. These fans are so passionate and, so excited every single game, every single season, and, I expect it to be a total hockey state, but they’re obsessed with their football, and I appreciate it greatly.”

Ensuring a Certain Standard and Building Trust With Receivers

The Vikings have, for the most part, been doing well over the past three seasons with Kevin O’Connell as the head coach and Justin Jefferson being the superstar wide receiver on the team.

McCarthy is set to take control of the offense as the starter under center, and so naturally, the question is how he has been dealing with the pressure of performing well enough to ensure the team doesn’t regress in his first year as a starter.

“I feel like KO (Kevin O’Connell), he set the standard, you know, our way, our team, our process. And, you know, how can we be the most connected, consistent, resilient, and relentless team possible, and I just try to come in here every day and play my role.”

Building trust with his wide receivers is yet another key requirement, and it can make a huge difference in how the season goes. McCarthy was asked to describe how this trust gets built apart from just learning the routes his receivers like to run.

“You know, it’s building the trust on the field, but most importantly off the field. Developing those intimate relationships that lead to success on the field and just getting with them after practice, playing games with them, and just sitting with them at lunch. All the little things where you could just bond and grow off the field.”

The Vikings had a surprising run to the playoffs last year when it was initially thought that they might be the worst team in the NFC North. However, former quarterback Sam Darnold fit excellently in O’Connell’s system, and the offense had a certain flow to it.

The division is expected to be even tougher with the Packers and Bears addressing their areas of concern during the offseason, while the Lions still remain a powerhouse of a roster. It will be fascinating to find out how McCarthy and the Vikings are able to perform this year.
