With the final set of games of the NFL preseason set to take place this week, it is time for teams to make one last push ahead of the regular season. For most of the teams, that means figuring out their final roster makeup and finalizing the depth chart.

For the Dallas Cowboys, however, they still have to figure out what to do with the whole Micah Parsons contract situation. Granted, the Cowboys do not have to do anything at this point, but how does that impact Parsons, and what does his future look like for the 2025 season?

Adam Schefter Shares Valuable Insight

ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter took to his own podcast, ‘The Adam Schefter Podcast,’ and also the ‘Pat McAfee Show’ to share his insight on the Micah Parsons and Cowboys contract standoff.

Schefter feels that both sides are not getting along to the point that there is a strong possibility the two will go their separate ways, and the question seems more on the lines of when and how this will happen rather than if it will happen.

“Micah came out and asked to be traded. Said he was ready to move on from Dallas, which I’m sure they didn’t like. And right now, both sides seem to be angry. Now, have other people put those feelings aside in the past and figured out a way to work out a deal. Yeah, I don’t see that happening here. I see these two sides headed towards a divorce in time. The only question is when is that divorce going to happen and how is it going to happen?”

He also raised the concern that a new deal cannot take place if there is no communication between both parties, something that has been the case with the Cowboys and their star linebacker since the end of March.

“You can’t get a deal done if you’re not even talking. And the two sides haven’t had any negotiations since late March or early April. And it sounds like at this point, it’s personal.”

What’s Next for Parsons?

After everything that has been coming out of the Cowboys’ camp, if at all Dallas is interested in getting a deal done with the 26-year-old, there seems to be no better time than now.

After all, their top two offensive players, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, were in a similar situation only last year, and Dallas got both extensions done before the start of the 2024 regular season.

The upcoming fortnight will be a crucial period for the Cowboys and Parsons, should both parties want to set aside their differences and work out a new deal. Having said that, as Schefter pointed out, the situation with Parsons seems more complicated than what was going on with Prescott and Lamb.

Dallas still has the option of franchise tagging their star defender for next season, after which they can explore and entertain any trade discussions if further discussions with Parsons are not fruitful.

While Parsons has been one of the top pass rushers in the league ever since his rookie season in 2021, it is his lack of success in the postseason that many experts have been critical of.

Perhaps it is the same reason Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ think tank are not ready to bring out the chequebook just yet. Should the Cowboys make the postseason, and should Parsons change this narrative, maybe that would be the trigger that sets off the discussions. But until then, there is plenty to ponder and even more to witness.
