Mexico Beat USA to Retain CONCACAF Gold Cup, Clinch Record-Extending 10th Title

American goalkeeper Matt Freese made several crucial saves to keep the match level, but Mexico’s pressure eventually told.

Mexico successfully defended their CONCACAF Gold Cup crown as they overcame an early setback to secure a 2-1 victory over Mauricio Pochettino’s United States in Houston, Texas. With this deserved victory, Mexico clinched a record-extending 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup title.

The match saw the US strike first, with Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards heading home a Sebastian Berhalter free-kick in the fourth minute. The ball bounced off the underside of the crossbar and narrowly crossed the line, giving Pochettino’s side a dream start.

However, Mexico responded strongly. They found the equalizer in the 27th minute when Raul Jimenez turned in Marcel Ruiz’s clever reverse pass with a precise finish into the roof of the net. Jimenez paid tribute to his late friend and former Wolves teammate Diogo Jota by sitting on the turf with a ‘Diogo J 20’ shirt during his celebration.

Mexico Dominate USA in Second-Half

Mexico dominated possession in the second-half and created several chances throughout. They had almost 60% of the ball and registered 16 shots in the match, out of which eight were on target. Meanwhile, the US struggled to threaten after their early goal. American goalkeeper Matt Freese made several crucial saves to keep the match level, but Mexico’s pressure eventually told.

In the 77th minute, Edson Alvarez scored the decisive goal with a diving header. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but it was awarded later following a VAR review, sparking wild celebrations among the Mexican fans in the ground. The win not only secured Mexico’s 10th Gold Cup title but also extended their strong record against the US in Gold Cup finals to 6-2. Notably, Mexico also won the Nations League earlier this year.

Despite guiding the US to the final with an impressive run, Pochettino and his young squad fell short at the final hurdle. After a worrying stretch of four consecutive home defeats, the USMNT improved in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. They claimed victories over Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia, Haiti, Costa Rica, and Guatemala to reach the final in Houston.
