Marc Guehi to Liverpool Deal Breaks Down, What Happened?

Liverpool’s hopes of landing Marc Guehi on deadline day were dashed after Crystal Palace pulled out of the deal at the final moment. The Reds had agreed a £35 million fee. It included a 10% sell-on clause. Reportedly, the 25-year-old defender had even begun a medical in London ahead of signing a five-year deal.

Why Did the Deal Collapse?

The agreement hinged on Palace securing a suitable replacement before the 7 PM deadline. The Eagles were even close to signing Brighton defender Igor Julio. However, that move collapsed when Julio opted for West Ham instead. Palace later managed to confirm teenage centre-back Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse for £20.8m.

Even so, head coach Oliver Glasner insisted that a Premier League-ready replacement was essential before sanctioning Guehi’s departure. A deal sheet was also submitted to extend negotiations beyond the deadline. However, Palace chiefs ultimately sided with their manager.

Glasner reiterated after the win against Aston Villa, “We had a meeting in March and we had an agreement that we’re just selling Marc if we have the right replacement in… there is no replacement in the building, so it’s clear that one part of the agreement is not fulfilled. That means we can’t sell Marc.”

What’s Next for Marc Guehi and Liverpool?

Guehi, who scored in Palace’s 3-0 win at Villa Park, has just one year left on his contract. Unless he signs a new deal, the English defender could negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs in January. This would then leave Palace at risk of losing a talented player on a free transfer next summer.

Liverpool, meanwhile, must rely on Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni as their central defensive options for now. The club had explored late moves but will revisit the Guehi situation with Crystal Palace in January.

The player may be available at a reduced price at that time. For Palace, retaining their captain is crucial as they prepare for a historic European campaign following their FA Cup win and strong start to the Premier League season.

Glasner stressed the importance of continuity. He said, “It’s not a gift or a wish for Oliver Glasner. It’s necessary for playing a successful season. We had a great start and our fans deserve to have the best players available.”
