Manuel Neuer Injury Update – Bayern Munich goalkeeper ruled out for several weeks after sustaining injury during goal celebration

The veteran goalkeeper tore a muscle in his right calf during Bayern Munich’s Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen and will miss multiple matches.

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer will be facing a spell on the sidelines after he sustained a tear in the muscle fiber in his right calf. The veteran goalkeeper suffered the injury during Bayern’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Neuer sustained the injury in a bizarre fashion. He pulled up in pain while he was celebrating Jamal Musiala’s goal in the 58th minute, Bayern’s second of the night. He was forced to leave the pitch as 21-year-old Jonas Urbig entered the pitch as his replacement making his Bayern debut.

The club later confirmed the extent of Neuer’s injury through a statement, which read: “Manuel Neuer suffered a torn muscle fibre in his right calf. The diagnosis was confirmed by the FC Bayern medical unit. [He] will therefore be out for the foreseeable future.”

Significant Blow for Bayern Ahead of Crucial Fixtures

According to a Sky Germany report, Neuer could be out until at least the upcoming international break. This means he will be missing Bayern’s return leg against Leverkusen in the Champions League and their Bundesliga matches against Bochum, Union Berlin, and St. Pauli.

The Champions League round of 16 first leg saw some incredible occurrences, including Liverpool and Barcelona’s wins. However, Neuer’s injury certainly came in an unaccepted way. Neuer’s teammate Joshua Kimmich joked about the incident after the match. He said, “Manu wanted to run – and then his calf went. He’d already said he was getting old.”

This is not the first time Neuer has suffered an unusual injury. Back in December 2022, after Germany’s exit from the World Cup, he broke his leg while skiing. That injury ruled him out for the rest of the season. He then returned to action after almost 10 months in October 2023.

Even with this setback, Bayern are in a favourable position going into the Champions League round of 16 second leg match. The club will be placing their trust in Urbig, who joined the club from Cologne in January. The young goalkeeper is also seen as a potential long-term successor to their ever-reliable goalkeeper Neuer.
