Lyon Sign Liverpool Midfielder Tyler Morton for £15M

With game time limited at Liverpool and manager Arne Slot overseeing a squad overhaul, Morton has opted for a new chapter in French football.

Liverpool academy graduate Tyler Morton has completed a permanent move to Lyon for a fee of £15 million. The deal includes a £10 million base fee with £5 million in potential add-ons. Liverpool have also include a 20 percent sell-on clause, which will guarantee them further funds if the midfielder makes another move in the future.

The 22-year-old midfielder joined Liverpool’s youth setup at the age of seven and was handed his senior debut in 2021 under then-manager Jürgen Klopp. However, Morton struggled to secure a regular role in the first team, making just 14 senior appearances across all competitions. He featured five times last season, though none of those came in the Premier League as Liverpool marched to the league title.

Morton Ends 15-Year Liverpool Journey With Ligue 1 Switch

Morton spent the last two seasons on loan in the Championship, impressing in spells at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City. His performances caught the attention of clubs across Europe and he capped off the summer by playing a pivotal role in England U21’s triumph at the European Championship. The midfielder registered an assist for the winning goal in the final against Germany.

With game time limited at Liverpool and manager Arne Slot overseeing a squad overhaul that has seen over £250 million spent on new signings, Morton sought a new challenge. Morton’s departure takes Liverpool’s total transfer income this summer to £145 million. The transer also brings an end to Morton’s 15-year association with the Merseyside club.

Morton has signed a five-year contract with Lyon. Morton had previously stated his desire to play regular senior football and a new chapter in French football now awaits the talented midfielder. Despite facing financial challenges, Lyon were able to meet Liverpool’s £15 million valuation.

Lyon have endured a turbulent summer as they narrowly avoided relegation to the second tier following financial complications.
