Luka Doncic will become eligible for contract extension on August 2.
The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly all in for Luka Doncic. After signing him in a blockbuster mid-season deal in February 2025, there are reports suggesting that the franchise is willing to offer him complete control over the structure of his next contract extension. Ever since he moved to Los Angeles, Doncic has made it clear that he wants his future to be with them. Not only this, but during his intro press conference, Doncic spoke about having a long-term contract with the historical franchise.
It wouldn’t come as a surprise if the 26-year-old will sign a long-term contract with the Lakers. The Slovenian would become eligible for contract extension on August 2, and he can explore a wide range of options for his next tenure with the franchise.
According to a recent report by The Athletic’s Jovan Buha and Sam Amick, the Lakers, who were kicked out of the NBA Playoffs 2025 in the first round, are willing to offer Doncic whatever structure he wants for his extension. The report suggests,
“While league and team sources say the partnership has been very positive for all parties, with the Lakers going to great lengths to make Dončić aware that they want him to lead the way in their next era, it remains unclear how the five-time All-Star will handle his contract situation.”

As he would be eligible for contract extension in August, Doncic can sign a four-year $229 million extension. The deal will secure his future with the franchise till the 2029-30 season. Apart from it, he can also consider a shorter contract- one with three-year, $165 million extension which would offer him a player option for 2028-29.
He would reach 10 years of NBA service with it, that would make him eligible for 35 percent max. The deal is expected to be worth around $418 million over five years, on the basis of the expected 10% increase in the annual cap. Another option that Doncic is likely to try is opting out after the forthcoming season and signing a five-year extension worth $296 million.

While Luka earlier said that he hasn’t thought of the contract extension since he was busy in basketball, their first-round exit would give him ample time to think about his future. A report by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin suggests that the five-time NBA All-Star will take his time to take decision around his extension, despite he expressed his willingness to stay with the franchise.
However, considering the freedom the Lakers’ front office has given to Luka, it is evident that they don’t want to leave any stone unturned in order to retain a generation player that Doncic is.
