Luis Enrique Press Conference – PSG Manager Wants His Team To Rewrite History in Rematch With Arsenal

Luis Enrique insisted that his team have taken important lessons from their earlier defeat to Arsenal and are now ready to make history.

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique is confident his side can draw on their experience against English clubs as they prepare for a massive Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal on Tuesday night. The French champions travel to the Emirates Stadium with momentum, having already eliminated Liverpool and Aston Villa earlier in the tournament. PSG finished 15th in the revamped league stage but they hit their stride in the knockout rounds, PSG are looking to reach just their second-ever Champions League final.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Luis Enrique said that while the Premier League is often hyped as the strongest league in the world, he doesn’t necessarily see it that way and opined that PSG’s recent triumphs over English opposition give his squad a mental edge.

“In terms of confidence, it is very positive for us,” he said. “We beat Liverpool and they won the Premier League this year. But that doesn’t mean anything because every single match is different. Everybody speaks about the Premier League as being the best league in the world. I don’t know if I agree or not. But we are full of confidence and looking forward to playing in the semi-final. Our next objective is to rewrite history and there is only one way to do that.”

Enrique also fired back at the French media for their recent criticism of his team. Despite reaching the last four of Europe’s premier competition, PSG have stumbled in recent games, managing just one win from their last four outings across all competitions.

“No one is talking about the goals or the games we’ve won, let’s talk about our defeats, that’s fine,” said Enrique.

“You can say everything you want, you can send everything my way. Our mindset is wonderful. The most unhappy or sad member of the squad is me so you can just imagine what the others are doing.”

“Let me just specify. Maybe I am getting things wrong but when I’m talking about the negative climate, I’m not talking about the fans or the staff within the club.”

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, unbeaten in 12 matches heading into the clash, stand in PSG’s way. With both sides chasing their first-ever Champions League title, the stakes are sky-high in this encounter.
