Lonzo Ball signs two-year contract extension worth $20 M with Chicago Bulls

Lonzo is averaging at 7.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in the ongoing season.

The Chicago Bulls signed a two-year contract extension worth $20 million with Lonzo Ball, ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. It means that Bulls will keep Ball with them through the 2026-27 season.

However, per reports from ESPN’s Shams Charania, the second year of the newly-signed deal is a team option.

Lonzo Ball’s return from Injury

Ball was traded to the Bulls from the Pelicans in 2021, where the latter received Tomáš Satoranský, Garrett Temple and some draft picks.

However, after a successful debut with the side, Ball was ruled out for the remainder of the season in April 2021 with pain on his surgically repaired knee. While things hoped to turn right for him, Ball had to undergo another surgery, which yet again kept him out of the 2022-23 season.

Later in June 2023, the Bulls announced that Ball would miss the 2023-24 season. The 27-year-old played his first game after the injury hiatus in October 2024 during the preseason, against the Timberwolves, and made his regular season return during Bulls’ opening game against the Pelicans.

Though he missed about four weeks of action due to a wrist injury, he wasn’t out because of the knee.

The California-born point guard played for the Bulls during their 133-124 loss against the Miami Heat, where he finished with five points, five rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes of gameplay. Lonzo is averaging at 7.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in the ongoing season.

Chicago Bulls’ Constant Struggles

Earlier this week, the Bulls traded their longest-tenured player Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings along with Siddy Cissoko from the Spurs in a three-team trade. In exchange, the Bulls get Kevin Huerter, Zach Collins and Tre Jones along with a 2025 first-round pick back from the Spurs.

The Bulls’ playoff woes continue to haunt them and in the current season, they are currently seated in the 10th spot of the Eastern Conference standings with a 22-30 record. However, with signing Ball for a two-year extension, it seems that the side still has faith in his ability to turn things around with his abilities.
