Liverpool Confirm Jeremie Frimpong Signing After Trent Alexander-Arnold Exit

Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in a €35 million (£29.5m) deal. The 24-year-old right back has signed a five-year contract at Anfield. The announcement came just hours after the Reds confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold would be joining Real Madrid ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Notably, Frimpong starred in Bayer Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga title win in 2023–24 and helped the team to a runners-up finish in 2024–25. Though Frimpong is widely seen as Alexander-Arnold’s direct replacement, sources close to the club suggest Slot views the player as a versatile option, capable of operating both at right-back and further forward on the flank.

The transfer fee will be paid in three annual instalments, with the deal taking effect upon the opening of the transfer window on June 1. Frimpong’s release clause was triggered by Liverpool following months of scouting and long-term interest. The club had previously attempted to bring him into their academy setup over a decade ago, before he joined Manchester City’s youth system.

Frimpong’s signing also strengthens Liverpool’s Dutch contingent as the right-back joins forces with national teammates Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch. Having come through Manchester City’s ranks, the full-back also qualifies as a home-grown player under Premier League regulations.

Frimpong’s Time at Leverkusen

Since moving to Celtic in 2019 and then Leverkusen in 2021, Frimpong has developed into one of Europe’s most exciting attacking full-backs. His explosive pace, technical ability and end product were on full display during Leverkusen’s unbeaten 2023–24 season, which saw the club lift both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. He made 53 appearances in all competitions last season as Leverkusen narrowly missed out on back-to-back league titles. In total, Frimpong made 190 appearances in Germany with Leverkusen, where he scored 30 goals and produced 44 assists.

Frimpong will face competition for the starting spot at Liverpool from Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley, who recently signed a new four-year deal at the club. Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s early departure to Real Madrid was sealed for a reported €10 million ($11.3m). The England international will now be registered in time for the Club World Cup. His contract with Liverpool was due to expire at the end of June, and Real Madrid moved swiftly to finalise the agreement.
