Inter Miami Duo Sidelined After Controversial Decision by MLS.

Major League Soccer have suspended Inter Miami stars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba from the club’s upcoming clash against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The authorities cited the duo’s unauthorized absence from the 2025 MLS All-Star Game in Austin earlier this week.

Needless to say, the decision has garnered a lot of controversy. However, MLS did not step out of their jurisdiction to announce the suspension. According to their policy, any player who does not attend the All-Star Game without prior approval is automatically ruled out of their club’s next match.

Lionel Messi is reportedly "extremely upset" after being suspended for Saturday's match.

Club Defends Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba

Inter Miami attempted to communicate the situation in advance. However, the league still moved forward with the suspension. Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas publicly criticized the punishment, labeling it ‘draconian’. Speaking at a press conference, Mas said, “Lionel Messi is very upset, like we all are in the club…”

He added, “They don’t understand the decision… why not attending an exhibition match leads directly to a suspension.” He emphasized that the choice to skip the All-Star event was made by the club, not the players, due to an intense schedule that saw Messi and Alba participate in nine matches over just 36 days.

Coach Javier Mascherano confirmed that Messi was experiencing fatigue. Meanwhile Alba had reportedly picked up a minor knock in a prior MLS fixture. Despite these circumstances, the league ruled that neither player had obtained official clearance to miss the All-Star Game. That, in turn, triggered the automatic suspension of the duo.

MLS Stand Firm but Promise Policy Review

MLS commissioner Don Garber acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. He stated, “I know Lionel Messi loves this league… Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it.” However, he did indicate that the league is open to reassessing the policy.

He said, “We’re going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward.” The suspension couldn’t come at a worse time for Inter Miami. They will face Eastern Conference leaders FC Cincinnati without their marquee players. They currently sit mid-table in the playoff race and are determined to gain momentum before the Leagues Cup kicks off next week.

Both Messi and Alba will be eligible to return when Inter Miami open their Leagues Cup campaign against Atlas on Wednesday. They are also expected to feature in the next MLS fixture against Orlando City SC on August 10. Meanwhile, the question remains regarding how MLS are balancing commercial spectacle with player welfare and team interests.
