Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu calls Stephen Curry after WNBA 3-Point Contest win

During the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, Stephen Curry narrowly defeated Sabrina Ionescu 29-26.

WNBA All-Star Weekend started on Friday night with two major events, the Skills Challenge and the 3-Point Contest. New York Liberty made a sweep in both events as Sabrina Ionescu won the 3-Point Contest and Natasha Cloud won the Skills Challenge. Ionescu won the three-point contest for the second time and tied Allie Quigley with the second-highest score in the event.

Why Sabrina Ionescu called Stephen Curry after completing Liberty sweep in All-Star Weekend?

Sabrina Ionescu also participated in a special 3-Point Contest in the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend against Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry. After winning the WNBA three-point contest victory, the Liberty star made a call to Steph Curry. During the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, Stephen Curry narrowly defeated Sabrina Ionescu 29-26. The NBA event was also held in Indianapolis.

“I called Steph after and was showing the trophy off because last time he beat be when we were here in Indy,” Ionescu said during her press conference. “So it’s just fun to be back here competing Obviously didn’t do it last year and so really happy to be able to be up here and put on a show for New York.”

Ionescu made his debut at the 3-point contest in the 2023 WNBA All-Star Weekend. The WNBA champion set a league-record with 37 points and missed only two shots in the entire round. NBA called her to participated in next year’s All-Star Weekend. Quigley and Ionescu are the only two players to have won the WNBA’s 3-Point Contest multiple times.

“Anyone who knows me, maybe from the outside it doesn’t seem like it, but obviously I get really nervous for these things because I do put a lot of pressure on myself and wanting to perform for myself,” Ionescu said. “But also for everyone who believes in me and wants to see a show. And understanding that I’m trying to continue to grow the game of basketball, and with doing stuff like this I think it does that.”

“The last time I was here in Indy against Steph [Curry], I lost. So, I feel like I had to redeem myself.”

Ionescu is averaging a career-high 35.7 percent shooting from the three-point line. She reached the career-high in 2023 with 44.8 percent and in same year, she won the 3-point contest.
