Leylah Fernandez vs. Tereza Valentova Preview, Prediction, and Betting Odds for WTA Japan Women’s Open (Osaka) 2025 Finals

Fernandez aims for fifth career title as rising teen Valentova seeks breakthrough

Fourth seed Leylah Fernandez will meet qualifier Tereza Valentova in the finals of the 2025 Japan Women’s Open in Osaka. The Canadian has been sharp all week, defeating Hailey Baptiste, Dalma Galfi, and Rebecca Sramkova in straight sets before edging Sorana Cirstea in a three-set semifinal. Valentova has been the breakout story, upsetting Alexandra Eala and third seed Elise Mertens in straight sets, then rallying past sixth seed Olga Danilovic and Jaqueline Cristian.

Fernandez’s season has been a mix of promise and inconsistency. She reached the third round at the Australian Open and a quarterfinal in Abu Dhabi before lifting her fourth career title in Washington by defeating Anna Kalinskaya. However, her results since then have been uneven, including a first-round loss to Naomi Osaka in Wuhan. Across 45 matches this season, she has fired 110 aces, winning 65.9% of first serves and converting 43% of break points.

Valentova, 18, has been on a steady rise, reaching a career-high of world No. 75 last month. The Czech advanced to the second round at Roland Garros and has already captured seven ITF and two Challenger titles this season, including Grado and Porto. She made her first WTA semifinal in Prague and now her maiden final in Osaka. In eight matches in the main draw, she’s won 62% of first-serve points, 47.8% on return, and converted 51.3% of break points.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
