Leylah Fernandez vs. Maya Joint Prediction and Betting Odds for Citi DC Open 2025 First Round

Canadian seeks rhythm as rising star Joint eyes another upset in DCCanadian seeks rhythm as rising star Joint eyes another upset in DC

With the beginning of the summer hardcourt swing, Leylah Fernandez faces Maya Joint in the opening round of the Citi DC Open today. The winner will earn a second-round clash with top seed Jessica Pegula. The 2021 US Open finalist, Fernandez, has been searching for a win since her last title run in Hong Kong back in 2023. This year has been far from her best, with an early high point being a quarterfinal appearance in Abu Dhabi.

Since then, she’s struggled to get past the third round at most events, until last month in Nottingham with another quarterfinal finish. Across 30 matches this season, the Canadian has tallied 60 aces, won 65% of her first-serve points, claimed 41.5% of return points, and converted 42.9% of her break point opportunities.

Joint, meanwhile, is enjoying a breakout season. Though her results have fluctuated, she’s already captured her first two WTA titles this year. After starting the season with a semifinal run in Hobart, she hit a rough patch with early exits but rebounded strongly. Deep runs followed in Cancun (semifinals), Merida (quarterfinals), Puerto Vallarta (quarterfinals), and Makarska (semifinals).

She lifted her maiden trophy in Morocco by upsetting Jaqueline Cristian in straight sets and just recently added a second in Eastbourne with a gritty three-set win over Alexandra Eala. In 28 matches this season, Joint has struck 35 aces, 62.6% of first serves, won 46.4% of return points, and converted 49.6% of break points.

Leylah Fernandez vs. Maya Joint Prediction

Joint’s two titles this year and strong return numbers suggest she’s got momentum, but Fernandez’s edge in experience and serving stats gives her a slight upper hand.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
