Leeds United Sign Newcastle United Midfielder Sean Longstaff

Leeds had previously seen a £10m offer rejected but returned with an improved bid to secure Longstaff’s services.

Leeds United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United for £12 million fee plus add-ons. The 27-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the newly promoted Premier League side. The transfer brought Longstaff’s 18-year association with Newcastle to an end.

Longstaff progressed through the Magpies’ youth system and made 214 senior appearances for the senior side. However, the midfielder struggled for game time last season under Eddie Howe. He played a total of 787 Premier League minutes, primarily from the bench. Longstaff was also part of the Newcastle squad during their Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool, though he did not feature in the final.

Leeds had previously seen a £10m offer rejected but returned with an improved bid to secure Longstaff’s services. The Englishman had already agreed personal terms prior to the breakthrough in negotiations between the two clubs. The midfielder becomes Leeds’ fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Sebastiaan Bornauw, Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Lukas Nmecha.

With this signing, Leeds manager Daniel Farke has strengthened his midfield ahead of the club’s Premier League opener against Everton on 18 August. Longstaff famously scored in Newcastle’s Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain in 2023.

I Got a Feeling That Leeds Really Wanted Me: Longstaff

Longstaff had been a regular in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns for Newcastle but fell down the pecking order behind Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton last season. The move to Elland Road will offer Longstaff the opportunity for regular first-team football as Leeds aim to solidify their top-flight status. After signing for Leeds, the 27-year-old said,

“I think from the first time I spoke to Leeds, I got a feeling that they really wanted me. It just fills you full of confidence and it just makes you want to repay those people. It is a massive, massive football club – similar to Newcastle in a lot of ways. It was going to take a lot for me to leave Newcastle to be honest and I wasn’t just going to leave to go anywhere so it had to be the right place for me and my family and I think this is a perfect place.”
