LeBron James Had a Hilarious Response About Him Playing the Center and the Effect It Had on Him

The Los Angeles Lakers were defeated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs, in 5 games. The Lakers were the 3rd seed coming into the series, and the Timberwolves barely managed to get the sixth seed in the West. Many analysts predicted that the Lakers were the favorite to win the series, where some even claimed that Luka Doncic would torch the Timberwolves, just like he did in the 2023-2024 playoffs. However, things were different this time around, and the Lakers were humiliated by Anthony Edwards and the rest of his team.

Despite having LeBron James and Luka Doncic, with AR15 as the third option, the Timberwolves shut down the Lakers, by simply exposing their lack of size and length, at the front court. While the Lakers weren’t bad offensively, their defense was horrible as they ranked dead last when it came to protecting the paint. Head coach JJ Redick had a lot to do with the personnel that was chosen to compete in the playoffs, and his lack of trust in his role players, and him sticking to his ways despite knowing that it was not working against the Wolves, cost the Lakers the playoff series.

Meanwhile LeBron James had to play the center position, and the reason why he wasn’t that great in the offensive end was because he had to play intense defense, on the other end, despite being 40 years old. So James was asked about how taxing playing the center spot was in the series, and he had a hilarious response for the question. Let’s find out what he said.

LeBron’s Witty Take On Playing Center Against the Timberwolves

It is no secret that James can play from 1-5, when the team requires him to. He has the perfect size and the frame to play any position, and in the first round series against the Timberwolves, James played a lot of minutes at the power forward, and the center spot, despite officially being a small forward. However, when he played the center, he had to guard Rudy Gobert, who is a 4x Defensive Player of the Year, and is officially listed at 7-feet-1- inches. Add that LeBron is 40 years old, and the size mismatch, it had to take a toll mentally and physically for the King.

When James was asked to share his thought on how taxing it was to play the center spot, James replied, “No comment. I never say that because my guy AD (Anthony Davis) said what he needed and he was gone the following week. So I got no comment. I put that uniform on every night. I gave everything I had and that’s all that matters.”

James’ comments comes after the Luka Doncic trade for Anthony Davis, which went down in February. Prior to the trade, Anthony Davis spoke to a reporter and had commented on how he did not like playing the center position, and he wanted to play the power forward position instead, while he was with the Lakers. However, instead of getting a center, AD was traded to the Mavericks just after a week, and thus the “Kings'” humorous reply.

The Lakers were playing without a center for the majority of the second half of the season. While Jaxson Hayes played the position at times, he wasn’t a starting Caliber center. We expect the Lakers to be aggressive in the offseason, and look for a reliable center who James, and Doncic can both rely on for paint defense, and for him to be a lob threat.
