The opening day of the 2025 Laver Cup brought plenty of thrills and surprises, as Team Europe pushed to an early lead. The defending champions showed that they are here to play, and made strong statements in the quest for a title defence. With the second day worth double the points, fans can expect loads of twists and turns as the tournament goes on. Let’s take a look at what unfolded on Day-1 ft. World No. 12 Casper Ruud was selected for the opening singles contest of the 2025 Laver Cup. He was up against big serving American Reilly Opelka in Match-1. While Opelka smashed 9 aces throughout the encounter, Ruud was not far behind with 6 untouched serves of his own. The Norwegian capitalized on his opponent’s inferior court coverage, and a solitary break of serve was enough to take the match. Ruud emerged victorious with a 6-4 7-6(4) scoreline.

Up next, 20-year-old prodigy Jakub Mensik faced 21-year-old powerhouse Alex Michelsen in a battle of the young guns. Making his Laver Cup debut on the black hard courts at the Chase Center, Mensik started efficiently by keeping the points short and making inroads on the American’s serve. Although the crowd was against him, the Czech sensation dropped his first game after 19 minutes, and went on to take the set 6-1. While the second and third sets were more evenly contested, Mensik prevailed 6-1 6-7(3) 10-8 in a humdinger of a finish.

Joao Fonseca Gets Team World Their First Point of Laver Cup 2025

In the opening clash of the night session, Brazilian superstar Joao Fonseca became the youngest Laver Cup debutant. He had a difficult challenge of overcoming Team Europe’s Flavio Cobolli. The 19-year-old suffered a nervy start, and went down 2-4 in the opener, courtesy some scintillating shot-making from the Italian. However, he won seven of the next eight games to grab Set-1 and take charge of the second. While the forehand to forehand exchanges were evidently a feature of this baseline-heavy duel, Fonseca credited his team for dragging him over the line.

Carlos Alcaraz/Jakub Mensik Beat Taylor Fritz/Alex Michelsen to Keep Team Europe in the Lead

As Team World inched closer towards nullifying the deficit, the onus was on World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik to finish in flawless fashion. They stepped onto court for the first men’s doubles match-up of this year’s Laver Cup, against Team World veteran Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen. It was a clinical display from the Spanish-Czech duo, who did not face a single break point throughout the encounter. While the first set was dominated on serve, Alcaraz and Mensik had to save a set point at 5-6 in the tiebreaker before claiming it 9-7.

The second set was more of the same, with some weak returns getting the treatment at the net. It was only in the final game of the match where Fritz was unable to hold serve. This led to a straight sets win for Team Europe, handing them a 3-1 lead. “Doubles is not just about one player,” said Alcaraz after the win. “You have to team up with a great player like I did today with Jakub. Thanks to him with his great shots, great volleying skills, he made me feel comfortable on the court.”

Result: Alcaraz/Mensik def. Fritz/Michelsen 7-6(7) 6-4.
