Aces: End of a dynasty?

The Aces will come into the game after playing against the struggling Connecticut Sun on the previous night. Before that, they acquired a much-needed 89-81 win over the Indiana Fever as A’ja Wilson scored 24 points.

It was a brilliant comeback win after the team trailed by double-digits in the third quarter. The biggest difference was the free throws, as Aces made 19 of 21 compared to 7 of 9 by the Fever. The win helped break a three-game losing streak, but the Aces are 2-5 in the last seven games(excluding Sun tilt)

We saw similar struggles last season, to,o but it looks even worse this time around. Losing Kelsey Plum and Alysha Clark has disturbed their balance. Jewell Loyd hasn’t been up-to-the-par but the team has a chance to make a strong comeback.

However, it looks like the Aces are not going to be title contenders this season.

Washington Mystics: Resolute youthful spirit led by vet Sykes

The Mystics enter the game after an impressive grind-out 68-64 win against the Minnesota Lynx, who were without their ace, Napheesa Collier. The Mystics held Lynx to 3/18 shooting from the three-point line. Meanwhile, they forced 19 turnovers (Mystics-14).

On the other hand, a 14-9 offensive rebounds advantage was decisive in generating 13 additional field goals (five more makes). It helped overcome a 9-17 made free-throw disadvantage.

This was Mystics’ second straight win, and they have held a strong 5-3 record at home. Shakira Austin’s return to form has been decisive lately. The rookies Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron(espescially the latter) have played at a high-level.

But more than that, Brittney Sykes deserves the credit for stepping up as a veteran leader on both ends.

The Aces haven’t played their best offensive ball this season, unlike previous seasons. However, Wilson is on a mission again and would keep them in the hunt for 80+ scores. On the other hand, the Mystics have been a superb defensive team, but are prone to errors too.

They will be under the pump away from home, and I see Aces scoring just over 80 while the Mystics’ score can fall below 80.

A’ja Wilson O 21.5 points: The Aces PF hasn’t been in the best of rhythm, but her offensive impact still rings loud. Wilson is averaging 21.1 PPG, but apart from the last game, she was held below 20 in three straight affairs. But I see her coming up with her second straight 21+ points game.

Shakira Austin O 15.5 points: Austin is averaging just around 11 PPG but has stepped up her game lately. She has scored in the 19-28 range during the last three games. I believe she will score over 16 again.

Jackie Young O 4.5 assists: The Aces SG has acted as a playmaker more often lately. She averages 3.8 APG for the season but has dished 5 or more in four straight games. I expect her to be in similar terrain again.

The Aces have been playing some uninspiring ball lately; however, a win for a squad like this can transform their season. They will play against the Sun on the previous night, but the Connecticut team isn’t going to cause much trouble (most likely).

On the other hand, the Mystics have been thriving despite their inexperience. It implies that Washington can have a decent chance of pulling off an upset. But hold your horses. The Aces can get back in rhythm against a team that hasn’t done all that well away from home (2-5).

Thus, I expect Las Vegas to win by a decent margin here despite a b-2-b situation.
