On Sunday, 06/15, the Las Vegas Aces (5-4) will host the Phoenix Mercury (7-4) in a WNBA regular-season matchup. The Aces are in the sixth spot, whereas the Mercury have ascended to the 4th rank.
Can the inconsistent Aces survive the promising Mercury? Check the predictions related to player props, total, and spread here.
Las Vegas Aces: Many issues, but the core can recover
The Aces enter the match-up after a 4-point win against the Dallas Wings, as Jackie Young exploded for 28 points. It was a close game, and a 15-2 finishing run by Young and Jewell Loyd lifted the Aces. It was a huge win without the team’s ace, A’ja Wilson.
The experienced team pinched out a 26-10 advantage on the free-throw line, a decisive factor. However, their perimeter defense faltered as the Wings made 40% of their makes (8) from the three-point line.
Las Vegas has been terrible defensively, allowing 47.3% FG(2nd last). Their rebounding has been horrible too, as the opponents have pulled 36.3 RPG (2nd worst) against them. The departures of Kelsey Plum and Alysha Clark have affected them on both ends.
Jewell Loyd had struggled before a 21-point performance in the last game. They need her to get going, or it will be a painful season.
Phoenix Mercury: Hangin’ tough
The Mercury comes into this game after an impressive 13-point win (93-80) against the Dallas Wings, as Satou Sabally had yet another 20-point night. They shot an impressive 15-35 from the three-point line and had an excellent 2.3 assists/turnovers ratio.
The return of Alyssa Thomas after 5 games boosted that stat as she dished 10 assists, while committing just 5 turnovers.
Meanwhile, Sabally is having the best season of her career, which has been a huge factor in the 7-4 start. Meanwhile, the rookie class with Lexi Held, Kitija Laska, and Kathyrn Westbeld has been highly impressive.
They scored in the 11-14 range during the win against the Wings, too. The Mercury has done a great job of nailing their triples, ranking second with 9.8/game.
Overall, the Mercury can become serious title contenders once their isolation specialist Kahleah Copper returns to make a formidable trio with Thomas and Sabally.
Mercury Expected Starting Lineup
SG: Monique Akoa Makani | SG: Sami Whitcomb | SF: Alyssa Thomas | PF: Kathyrn Westbeld | PF/C: Satou Sabally
Key bench players: SG: Lexi Held, SG: Kitija Laska, PF: Natasha Mack, C: Murajantu Musa, SG: Kahleah Copper.
Injuries/Updates: Kahleah Copper can RETURN here. Kalani Brown is a Game-Time Decision. Megan McConnell is OUT.
Aces Expected Starting Lineup
PG: Chelsea Gray | SG: Jewell Loyd | SG: Jackie Young | PF: A’ja Wilson | C: Kiah Stokes
Key bench players: SG: Aaliyah Nye, SG: Tiffany Mitchell, SG: Dana Evans, SF: Kierstan Bell, PF: Elizabeth Kitley
Injuries/Updates: A’ja Wilson’s STATUS is UNCLEAR. Megan Gustafson and Cheyenne Parker-Tyus are OUT.
The Aces have done well offensively, scoring from the mid to late 80s frequently. However, they have also given up a similar number of points. On the other hand, the Mercury is a marginally better defensive squad and a marginally worse offensive squad.
The return of Thomas will improve them on both ends. Overall, I see the total being in the 155-165 range.
Total: Under 164.5 for -110 at BetMGM
Satou Sabally O 20.5 points: The power forward has scored 20 or more points in seven of 11 games. I expect her to score at least 21 here, especially if Aces are without Wilson.
Jackie Young O 19.5 points: The Aces guard has scored 18.4 PPG this season but had scored 12 points or fewer before the 28-point explosion in the last game. I expect her to build on that momentum.
Alyssa Thomas O 8.5 assists: The point forward is averaging an impressive 8.3 APG. She has handed over 10 or more helpers in two straight games. I believe she will dish at least 9 here.
Main pick: Points: Satou Sabally Over 20.5 points at BetMGM
The Aces will face a tough opponent, and they have been vulnerable on both ends lately. The Mercury knows how to exploit minor weaknesses, and although they have struggled recently, the return of Thomas will be a huge boost against her arch-nemesis.
I see a close game here with the Mercury pulling out a win in the closing moments. A lot will depend on Wilson’s availability; if she doesn’t play, then Aces are getting burned by the superior Mercury frontline.
Spread/Money Line Pick: Spread: Mercury -4.5 for -110 at BetMGM
*Odds will be updated when they are released.

nba Hi, I am Shubham. I am currently an NBA Predictions Writer on The Playoffs. I enjoy this job because it helps keep me in the loop about the game I love while fulfilling the pleasure I derive from stats. I got into NBA writing through social media interactions in the mid-2010s as I shared my takes on young talents such as D’Angelo Russell. I hope you enjoy reading my pieces as much as Dennis Rodman loved rebounding the basketball!
