Debuting at only 16 years of age and currently at 17, Lamine Yamal has already etched his name into UEFA Champions League history. The Barcelona youngster already has a series of record-breaking feats to his name. The prodigy’s rapid rise in European football began on September 19, 2023.

He made his Champions League debut for Barcelona on the day and since then, he has not looked back. Since then, he has made records in every turn he has made. Starting from his first UCL goal for the Catalan club to his most recent goal in the semis, Lamine has made history.

Lamine Yamal’s UCL Debut

Yamal was the second-youngest player ever to make his UCL debut, only behind Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko. He made his debut for Barcelona at the age of 16 years and 68 days against Royal Antwerp at the 2023-24 season group stage. He became the club’s youngest-ever player in the competition to debut.

Lamine’s UCL Start

Only a few weeks later, on October 4, 2023, he was named in the starting lineup against Porto. Thus, setting a new record as the youngest player to start a Champions League match at 16 years and 83 days. He surpassed the previous record which was held by Celestine Babayaro since 1994. He not only set a record but also proved himself as a starter.

History-making Goals

Yamal has shown his scoring prowess time and again even though his finishing still needs some work. However, it didn’t let him down on March 11, 2025, when he netted his first Champions League goal. Barcelona won that match by a 3-1 margin over Benfica.

That day, at 17 years and 241 days, he became the youngest player to both score and assist in a single Champions League match. He achieved that feat by breaking the previous record which was held by Breel Embolo.

His impact continued to grow as he became the youngest player to reach 20 Champions League appearances. He achieved this feat only a month ago on April 10, 2025 at just 17 years and 270 days. In the same match, he scored a goal to seal a 4-0 win in the quarter-final first leg.

With that goal against Borussia Dortmund, he became the youngest player to score a goal in the UCL quarter-finals. Only a few days later, he scored a stunning goal in Barcelona’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Inter Milan. Thus, becoming the youngest player to score in a Champions League semi-final at 17 years and 291 days.

Yamal’s performances have drawn praise from both teammates and opponents. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick lauded him as a “genius” a few days ago. Inter Milan’s coach Simone Inzaghi described him as a “once-in-a-generation talent.” The youngster is clearly set to make bigger noises as he grows and breaks more records.
