Key NHL Speed Stat Highlights Why the Calgary Flames Are Off to a Strong Start

Anamika Shrivastava

Analyzing a Crucial Edge Stat Behind the Flames' Early Season Success

This season, the Calgary Flames are setting the pace in the NHL, topping the league in maximum skating speed at an impressive 24.06 mph. The forward players have been the main source of the speed advantage, consistently maintaining high speeds and helping the Flames start the season with a 6-4 record. Certainly, Calgary exceeds the speed of teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs (23.67 mph) and Dallas Stars (23.65 mph) known for their fast-paced style.

Although the Flames’ forwards are impressive with their fast play, the team’s defense hasn’t matched their level of performance. The defensemen of Calgary are not among the top 10 for consistent speed, however, one defenseman reached a speed of over 22 mph in a burst. However, in general, the Flames have depended on their forwards to establish the pace, making their offense versatile and challenging for enemy defenses to handle.

Put simply, slower teams are having difficulty keeping up with the speed of the Flames’ forwards, giving the Flames an edge. Interestingly, the Flames not only depend on sudden bursts to uphold their top speed in the league; they also excel in maintaining a consistent pace, making their speed game a crucial and enduring aspect of their strategy.

Even though none of their players rank in the top 10 for the fastest bursts (22+ mph or 20+ mph), the Flames are known for their consistent speed throughout their forward lines.

Will the Calgary Flames’ Speed Give Them an Edge Against the Oilers?

As the season progresses, Calgary’s dependence on speed could significantly impact the game. If they continue to maintain a fast pace and play quicker than their opponents, this could be a powerful asset for them.

For instance, the Flames will face the Edmonton Oilers, a more experienced and less agile team in the NHL, on Sunday. The Oilers were once very fast, but their speed has significantly decreased due to the departures of Ryan McLeod, Dylan Holloway, Warren Foegele, and other players.

Despite Connor McDavid’s absence due to injury, the Flames’ speed compared to the slower Oilers team could give them a special edge.
