The Golden State Warriors are gradually entering a new era marked by veteran exits. Kevon Looney is the latest name to leave the Bay Area franchise. And with that, the Warriors have lost a rare big in their undersized roster. Looney’s exit marked the end of an era.

The New Orleans Pelicans signed the free agent as soon as the free agency kicked in. The 29-year-old has inked an $16 million two year deal. Kevon Looney’s new contract marks a slight uptick compared to his Warriors’ contract.

He earned an average annual salary of $7.5 million from his three year deal that was signed in 2022. Reports indicate Looney hoped to stay, but the Warriors front office refused to match his $8 million valuation.

Kevon Looney’s move to New Orleans closes out his decade-long stint with the Golden State Warriors. GSW picked the Center as the #30th overall in 2015. In 10 years, Looney has played 599 games averaging 17.2 minutes. He has averaged 5.0 PPG, 1.6 RPG, and 1.6 APG over his career.

He was crucial for the side during the 2022 NBA championship run especially with his consistent presence around the glass. However, Quentin Post’s rise led to Kevon Looney’s reduced role within the lineup. The youngster is now a preferred choice who also offers a consistent three point threat.

Warriors Pivot to Experienced Defensive Anchor

The Warriors are now reportedly pursuing veteran Boston Celtics forward Al Horford. The front office sees him as an upgrade over the services of Kevon Looney. Horford’s experience aligns with the current window of the Warriors’ veteran core.

Warriors are likely looking at a two season window with their current core and Al Horford could help push the side farther in the playoffs. In the 2024-25 season, the Celtics defender averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists with a 42.3 percent shooting from the field.
