Kevin Durant to Reportedly Sign Contract Extension with Houston Rockets Soon

The Houston Rockets are in line to sign a contract extension with their newly acquired superstar Kevin Durant. If reports by Jake Fischer are to be considered true, then the extension will be signed “at some point in time.” The Rockets signed Durant during 2025 NBA free agency in a historic deal that involved seven teams and no fewer than 13 players. His current expiring contract has him owed $54.7 million, sparking panic among fans and the front office.

Notably, the Rockets, who finished the 2024-25 NBA season in second spot with a 52-30 record, received a blow earlier this week in the form of Fred VanVleet’s injury. VanVleet underwent an ACL surgery, and is most likely to miss the most, if not all, of the upcoming season. While Durant’s acquisition has gotten them covered, another major concern that looms is regarding his contract extension.

However, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that the Rockets will sign an extension with Durant at some point in time. While the details of the contract remain unclear, it is almost certain that the franchise wouldn’t want to let go of the two-time NBA Champion easily and aim to solidify his future with them.

Rockets Plan Long Future with Kevin Durant Despite Money Crunch

While the Rockets are planning a long future with the 2014 NBA MVP, they would have to be really smart with the money they spend. They have already signed big deals with stars such as Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. Soon, they will have to pay more to rising stars such as Amen Thompson. There is also a belief that Houston is trying to secure a long-term deal with Tari Eason, who also has one year remaining on his contract.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the new Durant contract probably needs to come in below the NBA’s maximum salary. It would be approximately $121 million over two more years for Durant. Considering this and the fact that he would turn 37 by the end of this month, Durant could sign for a lower amount or just take one guaranteed year instead of two. But regardless of the case, it does appear that another deal is coming between the 15-time NBA All-Star and the Rockets.
