Boulter begins Montreal bid against first-round opponent, Zarazua.
Katie Boulter kicks off her National Bank Open 2025 campaign against Mexico’s Renata Zarazua, with the winner set to face 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko in the second round. Boulter’s season has been a mix of setbacks and small wins. A foot injury forced her to miss key events like Doha and Dubai, but she bounced back with a quarterfinal run in Nottingham and claimed the Paris 125K title, where she overcame Chloe Paquet.
Despite these bright spots, most of her main-draw appearances have ended in the second round. Currently ranked No. 41, Boulter has played 20 matches this season, serving up 72 aces while winning 66.1% of her first serve points, 41.9% of return points, and 51% of her break point conversion rate.

Zarazua, now 27, enters with modest momentum. Though largely known for her doubles play, she’s reached the second round of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, career bests for her in singles. Outside of those moments, she’s struggled to make it through qualifying rounds or get past early exits. In 16 matches, Zarazua has recorded 10 aces and won 54.6% on first serve, along with 43.6% on return and 47.7% on break points.

No pudo con Anisimova y se queda en la segunda ronda, eso sí, con la satisfacción de conseguir su primera victoria en el cuadro principal 😎

Boulter’s stronger serve stats and recent title run suggest she has the edge, especially over Zarazua’s relatively light singles resume.

I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
