Khachanov and Borges are meeting for only the second time
Wimbledon 2025 continues with the first day of round 3 action, and the number 17 seed Karen Khachanov will play against Nuno Borges in the final match of the day on the No. 3 court. The pair has met only once before, but that was more than three years ago.
For Borges, this is already his best result at Wimbledon, and with a win today, he will tie his career-best at the majors if he makes it to the fourth round. As for Khachanov, the Russian is striving to better his quarterfinal finish from 2021.
Khachanov entered Wimbledon 2025 with a 4-2 record on grass this year. Since then, he earned a relatively easy straight sets win over Mackenzie McDonald in the first round, but was taken all the way to five sets in his second round win over Shintaro Mochizuki.
In that 3-hour 40-minute match against Mochizuki, Khachanov came up second-best in almost every major stat, yet managed to win the big points as he battled back from a 2 sets to 1 deficit. The 50-odd unforced errors are something he will need to cut back on.

Portuguese star Nuno Borges entered 3 tournaments prior to Wimbledon, where he finished with a 3-3 record. However, he has played well thus far at the All England Club, dispatching the 16th seed Francisco Cerundolo and Billy Harris in the first and second rounds respectively.
The only match the duo has played until now came in 2022 on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Khachanov pulled out a four-set win in what was otherwise a close match.

He becomes the first EVER Portuguese player to reach at least the 3rd round in every Grand Slam and he actually did it in the last 4 Majors! pic.twitter.com/0VHFgNluhy
The Portuguese is currently enjoying some of the best grass-court tennis of his career. But his game is more focused on play from the baseline with limited variety at the net. This should play into the hands of the Russian, who is one of the better movers on the court.
Khachanov hasn’t gotten off to the best start, but his big serve has the ability to trouble Borges. He will have to play better and reduce his unforced errors, which were a big factor in the last match.
