Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Wins: How Many Super Bowls Have The Chiefs Won?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Not so long ago, the Kansas City Chiefs were just another one of the NFL’s teams that had up and down seasons at times making the playoffs but getting bounced in the first or second round year after year. The Chiefs had been to 2 Super Bowls in the first four seasons of the Super Bowl era, only to never make it back there for another 50 long years.

Then, in 2017 everything changed as the Chiefs moved up to draft their future franchise quarterback in the first round. And as they say, the rest is history. Patrick Mahomes, the central figure for the Chiefs’ recent domination, will be leading his team to its fifth appearance in the big game since 2018. That means Kansas City will be playing in its seventh Super Bowl this Sunday.

Facing the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chiefs will have their hands full trying to stop the dual run game of Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts as well as the passing game which features stand-out receivers such as A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert. The Eagles’ defense has also performed at a high level and their shored-up secondary will be pivotal in the matchup against the Chiefs’ receivers.

And while we wait for Super Bowl LIX to get underway in New Orleans, let us take some time to see how the Chiefs prevailed in their previous iterations of the big game.

How many Super Bowls have the Chiefs Won?

To date, Kansas City has won four Super Bowls with three of those coming in the past five years. Kansas City’s first-ever Super Bowl win came in Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings in a game that saw the Chiefs win easily by a score of 23-7. Quarterback Len Dawson of the Chiefs was the MVP although his numbers were modest. Dawson finished the game going 12 of 17 for 142 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The Chiefs and their fanbase then suffered a long wait of 50 years before their next appearance and they finally made it to Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs would go on to win this game 31-20 although they trailed 10-20 at one point in the fourth quarter only to score 21 unanswered points. Patrick Mahomes won his first Super Bowl MVP on the back of 286 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and another trip to the end zone along the ground.

Kansas City has since then won back-to-back Super Bowls in 2023 and 2024. Super Bowl LVII saw the Chiefs win a nail-biting victory against the Philadelphia Eagles as the game went down to the wire. The Chiefs prevailed 38-35 and Mahomes earned his second Super Bowl MVP putting up 182 passing yards on 21 of 27 attempts along with 3 touchdowns through the air. He also added 44 yards on the ground on 6 carries.

Super Bowl LVIII was a rematch of Super Bowl LIV as Kansas City battled it out against San Francisco once again. The result went in favor of the Chiefs yet again as they edged out the 49ers in a 25-22 overtime victory.

Mahomes earned his third Super Bowl MVP throwing for 333 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception along with 66 rushing yards on just 9 carries.

How many Super Bowls have the Chiefs Lost?

The Kansas City Chiefs have lost two Super Bowls to date. Incidentally, the first Super Bowl they lost was also the first Super Bowl ever as the Chiefs played against the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay dominated the game, winning 35-10 on the back of MVP quarterback Bart Starr who threw for 250 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception.

The Chiefs then suffered yet another blowout at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV, losing 31-9 in the Buccaneers’ own stadium. This was the first time in the history of the NFL that the team hosting the Super Bowl went on to win.

Tom Brady was the game’s MVP throwing for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions. This was Brady’s fifth and final Super Bowl MVP.

Who is the most successful Chiefs Coach and QB in Kansas City’s history?

Without a shadow of a doubt, the most successful coach and quarterback in the history of the Chiefs franchise are Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. Together, the duo has not only restored glory to this franchise, but they have led the team to five Super Bowl appearances in the past 6 years. Having already won three Super Bowls and chasing the first-ever three-peat in the history of the NFL’s Super Bowl era, Reid and Mahomes are already in the conversation for the greatest coach-quarterback duo to have been involved in the game.

Should Kansas City prevail on today, their legacy will continue to reach the higher echelons of the league.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
