The 2025-26 NFL season was the worst season in the Kansas City Chiefs’ recent history. In fact, it was the worst season for the franchise in the Patrick Mahomes era as the team missed the postseason for the first time since he took over under center.
Finishing with a dismal 6-11 record on the season, the Chiefs fell to third place in the AFC West after nearly a decade-long reign at the top. While the high standards of the defense led by Chris Jones and company fell significantly, the offensive production was just plain terrible.
Mahomes was forced to do so much on his own, and his ACL injury in Week 17 means the Chiefs’ starting quarterback could be in line to miss the start of the season. As per the standard schedule, the Chiefs will play 17 games in the 18-week regular season with one bye week. This time around, the AFC teams will be playing 8 home games and 9 games on the road as per the NFL’s scheduling policy.

As per sources, the Kansas City Chiefs will have one of the toughest strength-of-schedule in the upcoming 2026-27 NFL season. The Chiefs’ strength of schedule is (.536), which means KC will have the fifth toughest schedule next season.
Looking at their schedule, the Chiefs will be facing the Broncos (14-3) and the Chargers (11-6) twice, as they belong to the same division. Prediction
Looking at the difficult schedule as well as the way things finished in the AFC West last season, the odds are stacked against the Chiefs for the 2026-27 NFL season. The Chiefs are in a tight division with the Broncos and the Chargers, taking huge strides in the right direction.
Furthermore, multiple positions took a step backwards from the receiver’s room on offense to the D-line and secondary unit on defense. Franchise stalwarts and big-name players such as Travis Kelce and Chris Jones underperformed. If the Chiefs don’t shake things up quickly, they may miss the playoffs for the second year running.
Having said that, with a healthy Mahomes under center and with Eric Bieniemy back on the sidelines, KC could get back to winning ways, and that should come as no surprise.

Both the Ravens and the Bills have two of the league’s top quarterbacks in Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. Both teams are also heading into the new season with new head coaches leading the way. The Chargers are divisional rivals who could become even better if injuries don’t derail them, and the Patriots will carry on from their recent Super Bowl loss, led by the Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye partnership.

Kansas City Chiefs Division Winner Odds for 2026-27 Season
The odds to win the AFC West are set at (+175), as per DraftKings. That puts the Chiefs second only behind the Los Angeles Chargers.
That said, the Chargers will begin their third year under Jim Harbaugh, and if that O-line can stay healthy, the Chargers will be a force to be reckoned with. Additionally, the Denver Broncos narrowly missed out on playing in the Super Bowl. Sean Payton has the Broncos defense rolling, while Bo Nix took a massive step up in his second year and could once again pose a strong challenge.
This offseason will be one of the more crucial ones for the Chiefs as they have a lot of catching up to do. In the meantime, the health and recovery of Patrick Mahomes will be another factor that may hamper their season. Should Mahomes miss a few games at the start, KC could immediately go on the backfoot.
