Kansas City Chiefs Nine-Year AFC West Reigns Ends as Division Set to Get New Champion

Eric Divakaran

Ever since losing the Super Bowl last February, the Kansas City Chiefs have never looked the same. Injuries, offensive line struggles, dropped passes, and uncharacteristic mistakes have followed them all season. What was once the most reliable machine in football has sputtered week after week, unable to string together the dominant stretches that defined the Patrick Mahomes era.

The result? no division title and their playoff berth hanging by a loose thread.

End of an Era; AFC West Crown Slips Away From the Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs nine-year stranglehold on the AFC West is officially over, the second-longest-title streak in NFL history behind only the Patriots’ 11 straight from 2009-2019. With Denver now 11-2 and holding a five-game lead with four to play, the Broncos have clinched at least a tie.

The Chargers sit right behind them, turning the division race into a two-team battle between Denver and Los Angeles. Kansas City, once automatic champions every fall, with watch someone else hoist the AFC West trophy for the first time since 2015.

What Went Wrong and a Fading Playoff Pulse

The downfall has been simple, the offense can’t protect Mahomes, receivers can’t catch, and the defense, while still solid, can’t carry the load every week.

Key injuries on the offensive line and at wide receivers never healed, and at wide receiver never healed, and the usual Mahomes magic has been limited to occasional flashes rather than full games. At 6-7, Kansas City is barely alive for a wild-card spot and would need multiple wins plus plenty of help over the final month. Even if they sneak in, matching Buffalo’s record of four straight Super Bowl appearances now feels like a long shot. Ten years ago the Chiefs were the hunters; today they’re the ones being hunted, and the crown has slipped.

I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
