Joshua Dobbs to start for the 49ers at Arizona, announces HC Kyle Shanahan

Dobbs to lead 49ers in Week 18 vs. Cardinals

Joshua Dobbs will step in as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in their Week 18 game against the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the decision ahead of the season finale, citing Dobbs’ dual-threat capabilities as a key factor. Brandon Allen will serve as the backup, while Brock Purdy, sidelined with a bruised elbow, will not play.

Why Dobbs got the nod

Shanahan praised both Dobbs and Allen for their readiness and contribution throughout the season. “They’ve been great, him and Brandon Allen,” Shanahan said. “They prepare like starters every week and split scout team reps, giving us great looks.” However, the 49ers’ offensive line injuries played a significant role in choosing Dobbs. With multiple starters, including Trent Williams and Aaron Banks, sidelined, Dobbs’ mobility adds a crucial advantage.

Since entering the league in 2020, Dobbs has displayed his rushing ability, recording 421 yards and six touchdowns on 77 carries. Shanahan emphasized this versatility, noting it will help manage the protection challenges the team faces.

Dobbs’ limited 49ers action

Dobbs has had minimal time on the field for San Francisco this season, taking only five snaps in Monday night’s game against the Detroit Lions after Purdy’s injury. He completed 3-of-4 passes for 35 yards and added a seven-yard rushing touchdown. Despite his limited exposure, his performance showed flashes of what he could offer as a starter.

This will mark Dobbs’ first start for the 49ers and the 15th of his career. Last season, he started 12 games across stints with the Cardinals and Vikings, throwing for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. His dual-threat skill set was evident, as he rushed for 421 yards and six touchdowns during that span.

Familiar faces and new challenges

Dobbs will reunite with wide receiver Jauan Jennings, a teammate from their time at the University of Tennessee. The two also trained together during the offseason in Dallas. Jennings expressed excitement for the opportunity, saying, “I’m happy for Dobbs… excited for him to get a start.”

Dobbs will lead a 49ers offense facing significant adversity, particularly along the offensive line. Shanahan remains optimistic that Dobbs’ mobility and preparation will provide a competitive edge against the Cardinals.
