For the first of their 41 home game this season, the Columbus Blue Jackets have dedicated a ceremony to honor the late Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew.

The former number 13 of the Blue Jackets passed away under tragic circumstances on August 29. Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau tragically lost their lives in August in a vehicular accident near their hometown.

Fans, players, and family gathered at Nationwide Arena to pay tribute to Gaudreau, affectionately known as “Johnny Hockey.”

The ceremony included a video tribute, a moment of silence, and commemorative patches bearing Gaudreau’s No. 13.

After the video, the arena observed a 13-second moment of silence to honor Gaudreau’s jersey number. The entire evening underscored the emotional weight of Gaudreau’s passing, especially as Columbus players and fans wore patches featuring his number.

This tribute was particularly poignant as Columbus postponed traditional opening night celebrations to focus solely on Gaudreau’s legacy.

According to Blue Jackets player Sean Kuraly, Johnny’s absence has left a void among his teammates, who continue to grapple with the loss.
