Can Raducanu outhit the American No. 5 seed in Beijing?
No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula faces former US Open champion Emma Raducanu in a blockbuster 2025 China Open Round of 32 encounter on Monday. Both players came through their first match with relative ease, and advanced without dropping a set. While Pegula has the advantage in terms of past record, the British young gun has all the weapons to pull off an upset. The winner of this match will take on either Marta Kostyuk or Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the pre-quarterfinal stage. Today, we will give you the match preview and predictions before BetMGM offers the best odds.
Despite reaching the final four at the 2025 US Open, failing to defend her runner-up points meant that Jessica Pegula slipped to No. 7 in the WTA Rankings. The 31-year-old American has won three trophies this year – at Austin, Charleston and Bad Homburg. Pegula was also the finalist in Adelaide and Miami, which boosted her 2025 success ratio to 72%. The former World No. 3 also played a crucial role in guiding Team USA to the runner-up spot at the Billie Jean King Cup. Seeded fifth in Beijing this week, Pegula beat Ajla Tomljanovic 6-0 6-3 in the Round of 64.

On the other hand, Emma Raducanu served 5 aces and won 71% points on first serve during her opening victory vs Cristina Bucsa of Spain. While the 22-year-old is yet to win a title since her triumph at Flushing Meadows four years ago, her progress in the second half of 2025 has been glaring. A semifinal at the Citi DC Open, two quarterfinals in Miami and Queen’s Club, and four Round of 16 appearances happen to be the highlights of Raducanu’s campaign. The Briton is 28-19 this year – including wins over the likes of Amanda Anisimova and Naomi Osaka.

Pegula leads the head-to-head against Raducanu by 2-1.
Interestingly, Pegula has won the two encounters which took place on American soil so far. Raducanu returned the favor by winning the solitary match-up in Great Britain. Their most recent duel was at the 2025 Miami Open, where Pegula needed three sets to overcome Raducanu. The 2025 China Open will be the first neutral venue to host this rivalry, and the third hard court meeting between the two starlets.

Both players enjoy trading blows from the baseline, and rely on hitting through the line. While Raducanu’s cross-court winners make her a terrifying contender to deal with, Pegula has a knack of painting the edges with her down the line groundstrokes. The 22-year-old finds herself in a potentially vulnerable spot due to her exploitable second serve, but has the ability to make up for it. She will be keen on drawing level in the head-to-head, and the bouncy conditions in China could present her the best chance to do so.
Prediction: Emma Raducanu in three sets.
