The New York Yankees’ season-long injury saga added a troubling new chapter on Tuesday night when second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. exited the first inning of a blowout win over the Baltimore Orioles with what the team described as right flank discomfort.

Jazz Chisholm Jr., one of the Yankees’ most dynamic players, appeared to tweak something on his very first swing of the night, a foul ball off Orioles starter Kyle Gibson. He immediately stepped out of the batter’s box, favoring his side while trying to stretch it out. After a brief consultation with the team’s training staff, he opted to stay in the game and continued the at-bat.

Just two pitches later, Chisholm lined a double down the right-field line and aggressively stretched it into a triple following an error by the right fielder. But after the headfirst slide into third base, third base coach Luis Rojas quickly motioned toward the dugout, signaling for a substitution. Oswald Peraza replaced Chisholm on the bases and eventually scored on an Anthony Volpe double.

The Yankees confirmed shortly after the inning that Chisholm had been removed due to discomfort in his right flank. With a history of oblique issues in the past, including a tear, any potential injury to Jazz Chisholm Jr. will really hurt the Yankees.

Speaking after the Yankees’ 15-3 rout of the Orioles, Chisholm said he’s feeling fine.

“I’m really not as concerned as everybody else. I feel pretty good. I’ve torn my oblique before so I know it’s not torn or anything. I can cough without any pain. It was just to be cautious not to try to overdo it. I’d rather take two to three days off than six weeks.”

However, the Yankees will wait for results from an MRI scheduled for Thursday in New York before determining a course of action.

Is Jazz Chisholm Jr. Headed to the IL?

Manager Aaron Boone, meanwhile, wasn’t quite as quick to shrug it off, and hasn’t entirely ruled out a potential IL stint for Jazz. “He seems to be doing good, but he’s definitely got something going on with the oblique. He just told me, ‘I’m fine.’ I don’t know about that, but we’ll see what we have.”

For a Yankees team already reeling from injuries to Gerrit Cole, Giancarlo Stanton, and Luis Gil, any extended absence for Chisholm would be another significant blow. Gil, the reigning 2024 AL Rookie of the Year, is sidelined until at least June, Gerrit Cole won’t be returning to the rotation this year, and there is still no timeline on Giancarlo Stanton’s return. The IL has been more crowded than the Yankees’ dugout at times this season, and Chisholm was not expected to join that list.

Whether this was just a minor scare or something more serious will likely be determined by the end of the week. It is unlikely that Jazz Chisholm Jr. plays the series decider against the Orioles on Wednesday in Baltimore.
