The Washington Commanders‘ 2025 season has been defined by injuries and disappointment, and no storyline encapsulates that better than the ongoing saga of second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels. Just weeks after suffering a dislocated elbow against the Seattle Seahawks, the former Heisman winner is still not cleared for contact, forcing veteran Marcus Mariota to make another start on Monday Night Football against the Denver Broncos.

Latest Injury Update for Jayden Daniels Paints a Murky Picture

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that despite participating in limited practice all week, Daniels “has yet to be cleared for contact” and “it remains unclear whether he will play next Sunday against Minnesota.”

Schefter’s phrasing left little room for optimism for upcoming Week 14 matchup. Yet NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport offered a slightly brighter take, noting the injury involved only limited ligament damage, no surgery required, and that Daniels “at least has a chance” of being cleared in time for the Week 14 showdown with the Vikings, exactly four weeks post-injury. Daniels himself has been vocal saying, if he’s healthy, he wants to be back on the field immediately.

Playoff Hopes Effectively Extinguished, With or Without Daniels

Even if Daniels miraculously returns next week and plays the final six games at an elite level, the math is brutal. At 3-8, the Commanders sit third in the NFC East, only a game ahead of the 2-10 Giants and four games behind the 8-4 Eagles with six to play. The wild-card race is equally unforgiving: Washington would need to leapfrog at least four teams currently holding 6-5 or better record, while hoping for a historic collapse across the conference. A 6-0 finish might not even be enough.

Barring a miracle, the Jayden Daniels return watch is now about pride, development, and 2026 momentum rather than playoff implications. For a franchise starving for hope, seeing No. 5 under center again this season would at least provide a silver lining to an otherwise lost year.
