Jaxson Hayes Returns to Lakers After Career-High Season in New Role, Pelinka Continues Frontcourt Overhaul

The Los Angeles Lakers have taken another step toward fortifying their front court by handing Jaxson Hayes a contract extension. Rob Pelinka is focusing on the defense first, as the Lakers have one of the weakest front courts in the NBA.

The move comes in the wake of Anthony Davis’ departure, a massive defensive loss for LA. The NBA veteran was a constant threat and is regarded as the best modern day defender in the pro basketball league. Following Davis’ move to Dallas, Jaxson Hayes assumed a more defined role in LA’s rotation.

Hayes, who remained a back-up at the start of the last season, got more minutes after the Davis trade. The former first round pick was impressive, averaging 6.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 19.5 minutes per game shooting 72.2% from the field.

He started 35 of the 56 games he played last season, showcasing improved consistency on both ends. Hayes has been on consecutive one-year deals with the Lakers, and this marks his third straight season under a similar contract structure. He will be earning around $2.8 million for the 2025-26 season.

Lakers Pick Ayton and Hayes, Move Past Horford

Rob Pelinka finalized Jaxson Hayes’ extension shortly after completing the DeAndre Ayton signing. The 26-year-old forced a move out of the Portland Trail Blazers that paved the way for a buyout.

Ayton is expected to slot in as the starting center, with Hayes backing him up as the second-unit anchor. With the two defensive deals, the Lakers have likely stopped their Al Horford persuasion.

The Celtics’ veteran was on LA’s radar, but the front office ultimately prioritized younger and more affordable options. The Golden State Warriors are the favorites now to land the 39-year-old, who also aligns well with the timeline of the core players Jimmy Butler and Steph Curry.
