Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini begins her 2025 National Bank Open campaign against Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito in the second round. The Italian received a first-round bye, while Ito battled past fellow qualifier Katie Volynets in a three-set opening-round clash. The 29-year-old Italian reached the semifinals in Miami and Stuttgart and had a strong clay swing, highlighted by her title run in Rome, where she defeated Coco Gauff, Peyton Stearns, and Diana Shnaider.

She also picked up doubles titles in Rome and Roland Garros alongside Sara Errani. Despite an early exit at Wimbledon, Paolini found rhythm again with a semifinal run in Bad Homburg. Across 40 matches this year, she’s tallied 53 aces, won 61% of first-serve points, 45.9% of return points, and converted 49.7% of break-point chances.

Ito, meanwhile, is still finding her footing on the main tour. The 21-year-old won her first WTA 125K title in Canberra earlier this year but has largely struggled to go deep in tournaments. In five main-draw matches, she’s hit just four aces, winning 51.9% of first serves and 40.4% on returns, and converting 50% of break points.
