Sinner is the obvious heavy favorite against Shapovalov in the third round of the 2025 US Open.
Top seed Jannik Sinner will face 27th seed Denis Shapovalov in the third round of the US Open 2025. Shapovalov opened with a straight-sets win over Marton Fucsovics and then edged wild card Valentine Royer in four sets, including two tiebreaks. Sinner, meanwhile, has looked ruthless, dispatching Vit Kopriva and Alexei Popyrin in straight sets.
The Italian’s season has been remarkable in spite of a three-month doping suspension. He’s lifted titles in Melbourne and Wimbledon and made finals in every event he’s entered. His only early stumble came in Halle against Alexander Bublik, while defeats in Rome, Roland Garros, and Cincinnati all came at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz. Cincinnati ended in Sinner’s retirement due to fatigue. Statistically, Sinner is operating at an elite level with 221 aces, 79% first-serve points won, 34% on return, and 43% break-point conversion across 322 opportunities.

Shapovalov has endured an up-and-down season. He captured titles in Dallas and Mifel Tennis, taking out Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul in the former and cruising past Adam Walton and Aleksandar Kovacevic in the latter. A semifinal in Acapulco highlighted his firepower, but inconsistency has cost him, with early exits elsewhere, including a first-round loss to Luca Nardi in Cincinnati. His numbers remain solid with 245 aces, 72% first-serve points won, 31% on return, and 46% break-point conversion.
For the first time since 2022, Denis Shapovalov has booked his spot in the third round at the #USOpen 👏

I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
