Sinner and Altmaier renew rivalry in Shanghai Masters second-round clash

Second seed Jannik Sinner will face unseeded Daniel Altmaier in the second round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters 2025. As a top seed, Sinner received a first-round bye, while Altmaier advanced by defeating qualifier Tristan Schoolkate in straight sets. World No. 2 Sinner arrives in Shanghai as one of the most dominant players on tour and fresh off a title run in Beijing, where he defeated rising star Learner Tien in straight sets.

His season has been defined by a fierce rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz, with the two meeting in multiple finals. Sinner has lifted titles in Melbourne and Wimbledon, overcoming Alexander Zverev and Alcaraz, respectively. His rare defeats have mostly come against Alcaraz, including Rome, Roland Garros, Cincinnati, and the US Open. Despite missing the opening three months of the year due to a doping violation, Sinner has compiled strong numbers, serving 297 aces, winning 79% of first-serve points, 34% on return, and converting 46% of 434 break points.

Altmaier, who turned pro in 2014, is still seeking his first ATP main draw title. He owns seven Challenger trophies, the latest in Sarasota in 2023. This season, he has put together modest but steady results, highlighted by a semifinal run in Challenger Turin and quarterfinal appearances in Rotterdam, Open 13, Cap Cana, and Cancun across both Challenger and ATP levels. At the majors, he reached the second round in Melbourne and the third round at the US Open, his best Slam appearances to date. Statistically, Altmaier has hit 306 aces, winning 72% of first-serve points, 25% on return, and converting 40% of 247 break points.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
