World No. 1 gets his campaign up and running.
Defending champion and top seed Jannik Sinner leaves his coveted trophy unguarded for the time being, as he returns to battle-field at the 2025 US Open. The Italian powerhouse challenges Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic in the opening round at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday. The winner of this match will face either Alexei Popyrin or Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 64. With the help of BetMGM, we give you the preview and odds for this contest.
World No. 1 Sinner has reached the final in five out of six events this year – winning two of them. He has captured Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and also finished as the runner-up at the Rome Masters, Roland Garros and Cincinnati Masters. At the age of 24, Sinner is dominating the tour with a 31-4 record in 2025. The four-time Grand Slam champion wins an unassailable 93% service games on this surface, and backs it up with a 41% break point conversion rate.

Vit Kopriva turned pro in 2015, and is yet to win a title on the ATP Tour. The Czech star will be looking to enter Round-2 of a major for just the second time in his career here at Flushing Meadows. In the first half of the season, the 28-year-old reached the quarterfinal stage at Grand Prix Hassan II, and backed it up by reaching the Third Round at the Italian Open. Although his 2-4 record on hard courts this year doesn’t do him any favours, Kopriva will bank on his 72% success rate on service games to help him do some damage.

Sinner is yet to lose a hard court Grand Slam encounter since 2023. Unfortunately for Kopriva fans, this trend is likely to continue for longer, as the Italian is the firm favourite to win this match. His relentless barrage of groundstrokes is likely to draw errors out of the Kopriva racquet, as the World No. 89 lacks the consistency to match the pace of Sinner. Considering this will be a day game on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Kopriva can test the endurance of the World No. 1, who is just returning from illness.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
Sinner is a dominant favourite when it comes to the betting odds ahead of this Round-1 encounter. Meanwhile, Kopriva is the underdog with very low chances of progressing to the Round of 64. According to the money line, Sinner has a 98% chance of winning on Tuesday (as per BetMGM):
