The World No. 1 is the defending champion in New York.
After a heartbreaking end to his campaign at the Cincinnati Masters, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has arrived in New York City with vengeance in his eyes. The Italian top seed will be determined to retain his title at the US Open 2025. Last year, Sinner eased past Taylor Fritz in the final to claim his maiden major trophy on American soil. With the odds stacked in his favour, can the 24-year-old live up to the expectations?
Sinner has been dealt with fairly favourable cards at this year’s US Open. With the fast paced nature of the surface proving to benefit his power-packed style of play, the four-time Grand Slam champion is unlikely to face major hiccups until the latter stages of the tournament. However, Flushing Meadows is known to be a venue where the unexpected becomes the norm. So who is Sinner’s first challenge? Let’s take a look.
Jannik Sinner will take on Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic in Round-1 of the US Open 2025. The head-to-head between these two players is currently 0-0. It is set to be their first professional meeting.

Vit Kopriva is currently No. 87 in the world as per the ATP Rankings. The Czech sensation is the fourth best player from his country, and is yet to win a title on the professional circuit. Kopriva started playing tennis at a young age, and idolized Roger Federer while growing up. Having turned pro in 2015, the now 28-year-old reached his maiden Grand Slam second round at this year’s French Open.
Kopriva has a win-loss record of 8-9 on tour this year. Primarily featuring on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2025, he made a breakthrough with a quarterfinal finish at the Grand Prix Hassan II in April. At the recently concluded Winston-Salem Open, Kopriva reached the Round of 32 where he lost to Sebastian Korda. With six Challenger trophies to his name, Czechia’s talented mainstay will aim to upset the top ranked player in the world.
Sinner has very strong odds of beating Kopriva in Round-1 of the 2025 US Open. According to BetMGM, the Italian has 1/100 chances of advancing to the Round of 64. Meanwhile, Kopriva is an extreme minnow, with unfavourable 17/1 odds. When it comes to the sets betting, the likelihood of Sinner winning in three straight sets is currently 1/5.
