Jannik Sinner may have taken home his first Wimbledon title on Sunday, but according to his coach Darren Cahill, one of the biggest influences behind that triumph is the very man he defeated, Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner beat the two-time defending champion in a commanding four-set comeback, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, to win his fourth Grand Slam title and become the first Italian man in history to win at the All England Club.

Inside the Rivalry: How Alcaraz Pushes Sinner to Evolve

Cahill, who has coached legends like Andy Murray and Simona Halep with plans to retire by the end of 2025, revealed just how much Alcaraz motivates Sinner behind the scenes.

“Jannik watches more Carlos matches than he does anybody else,” Cahill told reporters after the win. “Because he’s fascinated with the improvements coming in his game, and he’s pushing us as coaches to make sure that he’s improving also as a tennis player. The rivalry is real. It’s there. Hopefully it’s going to be there and real for the next 10 or 12 years.”

That rivalry had been slightly lopsided leading into Sunday’s final. Alcaraz had won their last five meetings, including a five-set classic at Roland Garros just a month ago. As former world No. 1 Jim Courier noted, the matchup felt “special,” but perhaps too tilted in Alcaraz’s favor. Sinner’s win at Wimbledon put that narrative to rest, at least for now.

The head-to-head now stands at 8-5 in favor of Alcaraz, but both have delivered crushing Grand Slam blows to each other this season. Alcaraz’s Roland Garros title came at Sinner’s expense, and now Sinner has returned the favor by dethroning him at SW19. Intriguingly, both players’ only Grand Slam final losses have come at the hands of one another. Alcaraz is 5-1 in Slam finals, while Sinner stands at 4-1.
