Jamie Gittens Undergoes Medical After Chelsea Agree Deal With Borussia Dortmund

Gittens becomes Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer, following striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo, and defender Mamadou Sarr.

Chelsea have moved decisively in the summer transfer window securing a £55 million deal with Borussia Dortmund for Jamie Gittens. The 20-year-old English winger has also completed the main part of his medical as a new Chelsea player. Notably, Gittens agreed to a seven-year contract with the Blues earlier in June.

Gittens was identified as Chelsea’s primary target to replace Jadon Sancho following his return to Manchester United, which cost Chelsea a £5 million penalty fee. Dortmund had initially rejected a £42 million bid on 10 June, holding out for an amount closer to £60 million, but talks progressed rapidly in the US to finalise the agreement.

Both clubs are competing in the FIFA Club World Cup in US. Chelsea advanced to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals after a dramatic 4-1 extra-time victory over 10-man Benfica. Meanwhile, Dortmund will take on Mexican side Monterrey in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.

Jamie Gittens’ Impressive Season at Dortmund

Gittens becomes Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer, following striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo, and defender Mamadou Sarr. His arrival comes at a crucial time, with Mykhailo Mudryk provisionally suspended after being charged by the FA for violating anti-doping regulations. Chelsea secured the youngster’s signing as Enzo Maresca wanted to bolster his team’s options on the wings ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The England U21 international enjoyed a breakout season for Dortmund, tallying 12 goals and five assists in 48 appearances across all competitions. However, Gittens will be unable to feature in the ongoing Club World Cup for Chelsea due to FIFA regulations preventing players from representing two clubs in the same tournament. The youngster already played for Dortmund against Fluminense in their opening group match.

After spending two years in Manchester City’s youth system, Jamie Gittens moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2020, making his senior debut two years later. Since joining the German giants, Gittens has recorded 17 goals across 107 appearances under Niko Kovac. An England youth international, Gittens will hope to break into Thomas Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup squad following his move to Chelsea.
