Travis Hunter, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ two-way sensation, made his NFL debut in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers on September 7, 2025, in a 26-10 victory at EverBank Stadium, playing both wide receiver and cornerback. The No.2 overall pick caught six passes for 33 yards on eight targets, as a receiver (44 offensive snaps), and added one tackle on six defensive snaps. His limited defensive role, still showcased his rare versatility. However, is that how the Jaguars should proceed with his development this season?
The debate over Hunter’s two-way role has split fans, with some thrilled by his potential to redefine versatility. While others, including NFL analysts, express growing skepticism. Concerns about snap counts, as we saw in Week 1, and long-term durability persists, with many voices championing him, but others want him to focus on either being a receiver or a full time corner, to maximize his growth in one area of the field.

As mentioned earlier, while some fans, analysts, and coaches, are amazed with Travis Hunter’s versatility as a player, others have their doubts. Rex Ryan, a former Buffalo Bills head coach and an NFL analyst, has already seen enough of Travis Hunter’s two-way ability and to put it simply, he thinks it’s time to move past it and find a permanent role.
On ESPN’s show Get Up, when Rex Ryan was asked about Travis Hunter’s first impression after Week 1 he said, “Not gonna happen man, are you kidding me? The offense he’s out there for 44 snaps… Hey Jacksonville, what are you doing? It’s a hell of a lot harder to find a corner than a receiver. Put him as a starting corner… forget all that jazz.”
We believe that Travis Hunter should play a single position and Rex Ryan is right. This is because, playing that many snaps in just a single game is simply absurd and may not be sustainable long term. Hunter might end up injuring himself, trying to play both offense and defense.
While playing as a corner and a wideout worked from him prior to the NFL, playing for Colorado, this may not work in the NFL. While the Jaguars may plan to use him as a primary receiver and as a situational corner, a cautious approach may be needed moving forward. It is a long season and fatigue could play a huge role. Week 2 against the Bengals will test his evolving role even further.

mma I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
