Is Giancarlo Stanton considering retirement?

Between his declining health, the bizarre messaging from the Yankees, and the growing speculation...

For years, Giancarlo Stanton has been labeled washed. His declining speed, lack of defensive value, and frequent injuries have turned his massive contract into an anchor for the Yankees. Paying $30 million a year for a hitter who’s inconsistent at best, and unavailable at worst, has fueled criticism.

And yet, Giancarlo Stanton reminded everyone in 2024 exactly why he’s paid that money: seven home runs, 16 RBIs, and an ALCS MVP performance, stepping up when Aaron Judge struggled. Even with all that, it’s impossible to ignore that Stanton hasn’t played over 120 games since 2021, and injuries have defined his recent seasons.

So why are we even talking about retirement when Stanton’s contract runs through 2027 (with a club option for 2028)?

The Yankees’ clown show

As a Yankees fan, I’ve seen this team fumble basic transparency time and time again. They try to control the message but end up feeding multiple, often conflicting narratives. Stanton’s current situation is no different.

To recap:

Stanton is dealing with tendinitis in both elbows and reportedly played through intense pain last season.
He left spring training for New York due to a trip described by Aaron Boone as “personal in nature.”
But then it turned out he was seeing a doctor – so was it personal, or was it medical?
Aaron Judge, the team captain, openly admitted, “We’ll see what the doctors say about what’s going on.”
Stanton himself hasn’t swung a bat since mid-January because of discomfort.
Surgery is apparently on the table if he overdoes it.

At this point, the Yankees’ best-case scenario isn’t having Stanton ready for Opening Day. It’s managing his injury properly so he’s fully fit for the second half of the season when they (hopefully) have something to play for.

So… Giancarlo Stanton retirement?

The idea of Stanton hanging up his cleats gained traction after Boone’s latest cryptic comments:

“There’s nothing else more to say right now. Hopefully, we see him soon. If he wants to address anything, he can. But there’s really nothing more to answer right now.”

That doesn’t sound like a guy talking about a routine injury. That sounds like someone dodging something bigger.

Right now, there aren’t clear signs pointing to an immediate Giancarlo Stanton retirement. But between his declining health, the bizarre messaging from the Yankees, and the growing speculation, it’s fair to wonder if this situation is deeper than they’re letting on.
