WNBA Postseason Push: Important WNBA Games which will Decide the Fate of the 2025 WNBA Playoffs

Garima Ranawat

The Minnesota Lynx and the Las Vegas Aces have already booked playoff berths in the ongoing season.

The 2025 WNBA regular season is nearing its end, and with every passing day, the race among teams to grab a playoff spot has intensified. So far, the Minnesota Lynx and the Las Vegas Aces have booked themselves a postseason berth. On the other hand, teams including the Connecticut Sun, Chicago Sky, and the Dallas Wings have been kicked out. The Dream and the Phoenix Mercury are also a couple of wins away from reserving their seeds. It means that the actual contest has come down to eight names.

As of now, there are over 30 regular season games remaining before the league heads to the playoffs. However, the fate of the playoffs will be decided by a couple of games, and here in this article, we will take a look at crucial fixtures. Let’s get going.

Washington Mystics vs Indiana Fever, September 7

The Washington Mystics will host the Indiana Fever on Sunday, September 7, at Royal Farms Arena in their second-last regular season game. As of now, the Fever are sixth seeds with a 20-18 tally, while the Mystics have occupied the tenth spot with a 16-22 record. While Fever’s qualification almost seems certain, the Mystics need to win all of their remaining games. It would move them a few spots up and earn them a playoff berth. In case of any loss, their playoff hopes could shatter as their qualification picture is still risky.

The Fever, who are fighting to lock in their playoff spot, despite injuries to their key players, would also wish to maximize their chances of qualification. While they already look safe, a win over the Mystics would help them solidify their spot in the sixth or seventh spot.

Washington Mystics vs Phoenix Mercury, September 4

The Washington Mystics will lock horns with the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday, September 4. The Mercury are 2-0 against the Mystics in the ongoing season, and they would want to cleansweep their rivals with a 3-0 record. The game carries a significant importance for the Mystics’ playoffs chances and the Mercury’s seeding. The Mystics are in the tenth spot of the standings while the Mercury are in the fourth spot, and have almost officially booked themselves a playoff berth.

This game would be one of the final opportunities for the Mystics to keep their playoff season hopes alive and for the Mercury to finalize their favorable playoff berth.

Golden State Valkyries vs Washington Mystics, August 30

The Golden State Valkyries meet the Washington Mystics on Saturday, August 30 at Chase Center. The Valkyries have fared well in the debut season, and shown resilience throughout the campaign. Needless to say, making the playoffs would be a big accomplishment for the franchise. They are currently seventh seeded with a 19-18 win-loss record, and have a total of seven regular season games remaining.

The Valkyries need to win almost all their remaining games, including this one in order to solidify their playoff berth. Not only this, but the win is also crucial for the Mystics considering their faint playoff hopes, and the fact that they need to win all their games in order to move up in the standings.

Golden State Valkyries vs Seattle Storm, September 9

The Valkyries will be up against the Storm on September 9 in their respective second-last fixtures of the regular season. As stated, the Valkyries have had a remarkable season, and they are currently in the seventh spot with a 19-18 win-loss record. They have a few difficult fixtures coming up, and hence, they need to win as many games as they can against a few comparatively weaker teams, in order to solidify their playoff berth.

The Mystics, on the other hand, are in a weaker spot, and they require maximum victories to boost their chances to qualify for their playoff berth. The upcoming game could significantly influence the race for the final playoffs spot and potential tiebreakers.

Los Angeles Sparks vs Las Vegas Aces, September 11

The Los Angeles Sparks will be up against the Las Vegas Aces in one of the last fixtures of the current regular season. The Aces have already booked their playoff berth, while the Sparks are in the ninth spot with a 17-19 win-loss record. Not significantly, but the game might have significance on a couple of playoff spots or seedings.
